# Ashes and Tears  <sub>Image from [Pixabay](https://pixabay.com/images/id-84648/), edited through Canva</sub> The cold winds sent shivers as it touched my skin tonight as I anxiously walked along this familiar street that once was heavily crowded. Its streetlights used to compete with the stars that now shimmered and glistened in the heavens as if celebrating the defeat of their flourescent contenders. Tonight would have been one of those bright, starry nights if not for the melancholy feeling the winds and the skies are brewing. Dark clouds and silent flashes of lights greeted me when I looked up at the sky. There's a storm coming. I used to be frightened by the calm before a storm, but how I terribly wish my heart could be at some peace now before the angry skies open up to pour its rage. I need to see her again. It has been ages since I last got a glimpse of her beautiful soul. I missed everything about her. Her rosy cheeks that glows when she smiles. Her eyes that never ceases to see the goodness in me even when at times, I feel like I am the worst. Her smile that used to brightens up my stormy days. Her hair that smells of lavender and milk. I know I'm not supposed to be around her. Not anymore. But I need to see her. Just this once. If only I had chosen her when I had the chance. We could've gotten married. We could have built a family. Buy a house in the countryside. I will work at home while she takes care of the kids. She will cook. She's not the best at it, but I am certain she will prepare our meals with all her heart. We will never part. I will be by her side whenever she needs me and she will be beside mine. We would have. We could have. Now all I can get is just a glimpse of her. My pace got faster as I saw her by the window. Her beautiful face painted distraught all over. I heard her phone rang. Her hands trembling, she pressed the green button as if dreadingly awaiting something horrible. Silence fell on her as soon as the caller spoke. She struggled to keep her footing and found refuge on the window sill as she slowly rested her quivering knees. I can't be certain if those are tears peering down her eyes, but as they glinted against the gloomy moonlight, I can say it hasn't been the news she wanted to hear. And then I felt it. The last strands of hope slowly running off. How I love to have a few more moments with her. But all I have now is a race against time. A race that no matter what I do, I simply cannot win. *"Can I see him? Please?"* At last she spoke, the only words she found while she sobbed mournful tears. She knew the answer but she needed to ask. She needed to see for herself, just like I needed to see her too. I just stood by the door, watching her weep. It pained me to see her hurt. But there was nothing I could do. Not anymore. The phone call ended. She cried and cried even more. I slowly walked towards her. I wanted to take her sorrows away, if that's the only thing I can take away when I go. *"Don't worry, my love. I see you."* I wished our story could have been different. It could have been happier. Maybe in another life. Thunder clapped angrily. Rains started to pour as the fire blazed over my lifeless self. And then I was gone. I am no more. I am nothing. Nothing but ashes. And tears that came along with it.
