(The ECB's first hike on 27th July merely took rates from -0.5% to zero, and the markets thought they were going too slow and the euro dived. They then made up for it with a series of 0.75% hikes). The markets now think the interest rate differential with the USA will narrow. They expect the next Fed hike to be 25 basis points to 4.75%, but the ECB to hike by 50 basis points to 2.5%. Why is this important? Well for some unknown reason (perhaps because of programmed algorithm trading), both gold and bitcoin trade inversely to the Dollar Index. The weaker the Dollar Index, the higher the bitcoin price, and vice versa. Because the euro is such a big component of the Dollar Index, the stronger the euro is, the stronger bitcoin is. So let's hope the euro recovers to the level it was this time last year.
