I think there is all kind of people that work as a computer programmer. 

So even though there are some with a ver wealthy social life as you mentioned, the typical programmer must also exists out there (the nerd that works late in the night, again, as you mentioned)

But as this kind of job become more and more popular, the type of people that study this will become greater as well, so yes, the typical programmer will become less common as time goes by.

I am a freelance programmer.  Like any job, you really see all kinds of people from all walks of life.  For example, I live on a boat and often move from place to place because I like to travel.  Of course, I also have to work, so I do it from the boat in most cases.  And yes, like a "typical programmer" most of my hobbies involve computers and technology because that is what I have a passion for.  I don't think I would have become a programmer if I didn't (my masters is in chemical engineering not computer science).
