**Hola estimados Hivers... 
Esta es mi primera incursión en la comunidad Holos-Lotus motivado por la iniciativa de la amiga @mosa71.**

Desde muy pequeño siempre me gustó la música; pero sobre todas las cosas lo que más me ha gustado siempre... es cantar. Eso en gran parte se lo debo a mi padre, quien en su juventud cantaba con tremenda "bomba". Tocaba el bongo y la Marímbula, -una especie de sustituto del contrabajo muy utilizado en la música tradicional cubana-. Y a mi hermano Orestes, de quien ya he dicho en otros posts que fue pianista de una famosa banda musical cubana de los años 70, "Los Barbas". Cuando yo tenía 7 u 8 años, nada más que llegaba de la escuela, enseguida soltaba mi maletica llena de libros y me ponía a cantar con él; acompañándome al piano. Nos divertíamos "de lo lindo" haciéndolo y compartiendo juntos ese tiempo inolvidable de calidad al que siempre se unía mi padre para cerrar "con broche de oro" en una suerte de geniales improvisaciones. Así fue el cimiento donde se construyó una armonía familiar y musical, ese espíritu mágico que aún perdura profundamente en mi corazón. 

A mí en realidad la música "comercial", pensada y calculada para vender; nunca "me puso los pelos de punta". Y con los años fui descubriendo como mi entusiasmo real se inclinaba hacia la música popular cubana con sus grandes Soneros, Guaracheros, Boleristas y "Filineros". Hoy puedo confesarles con mucho orgullo que lo que me "volvía loco" de verdad en aquella etapa de mi inocencia; cada vez que escuchaba la radio o los veía en la tele con sus rítmicos tambores y voces tan naturales y llenas de energía y sentimiento... eran los exponentes de nuestro rico y variado folklore afrocubano, cosa que por supuesto a mi padre le encantaba... 

Mis padres eran católicos, y vivíamos en una zona del barrio del "Vedado" donde no existía de manera abierta una relación con la música mágico-religiosa afrocubana. En Cuba durante mucho tiempo las religiones (en su totalidad) fueron mal vistas por el gobierno, se practicaban en secreto y se transmitían de manera familiar. No tengo claro que estuvieran prohibidas por la ley, pero lo que si recuerdo muy bien es, que si eras un "religioso" declarado; eso definía de gran manera como iba a ser tu vida y las ventajas que no tendrías. Con solo decir que a mis padres -que no pertenecieron al "partido" y siempre tuvieron responsabilidades en sus centros laborales muy por debajo de sus capacidades intelectuales- en los años 70 me bautizaron en una Iglesia Católica a escondidas para que no los botaran del trabajo. Con esto lo que quiero es que se imaginen que para presenciar un "Toque de Tambor Batá de Fundamento", un "Cajón espiritual a los muertos" o simplemente; una buena rumba... había que meterse en "La Caliente" o sea... ir a los barrios más humildes, o a los repartos que en aquella época eran considerados marginales. A la edad de 35 años me dediqué a buscar en esos barrios y repartos toda la información musical al respecto en pos del sueño de aprender de los que saben de verdad, y de "beber" si me lo permitían "Directamente de la fuente". 

Aunque mi alma era la de un "Negrón" enamorado de esa música; yo estaba atrapado en el cuerpo de un "Blanquito pelú" con pinta de hippie; y les confieso que no me fue fácil ganarme la confianza de aquellos defensores de ese gran legado cultural. Para que me mostraran sus secretos musicales y además, como no era "religioso" ni tenía la menor intención de serlo, ellos no entendían para qué yo quería aprender aquello. Simplemente, lo que yo quería era impregnarme de ese concepto rítmico y aprender sus diferentes giros melódicos para fusionarlo con el Jazz y así crear un estilo auténtico a la hora de condimentar la música que se estaba cocinando a fuego lento en mi interior, en otras palabras... estaba buscando mi sonido. 

Les cuento, que incluso una vez fui expulsado de una fiesta, donde no se estaba practicando (aclaro) ninguna ceremonia religiosa, simplemente porque no entendían –¿Qué es lo que "él" está haciendo aquí? -Jajajajajajaja-. Con esta persistencia que siempre me ha acompañado -Dios mediante- durante toda mi vida. La educación que me dieron mis padres y un interés a toda prueba, enfilado solamente en la meta de aprender ese concepto musical que viene además de los que también considero parte de mis ancestros, me fui ganando el respeto, la amistad y el cariño de todos, incluso de los que me rechazaron al principio y aprovecho este espacio para agradecerles por lo mucho que me ayudaron y todo lo que pude aprender de ellos. 

Esto que les cuento fue hace ya mucho tiempo; más de 30 años. Ahora en mi Cuba las religiones están de moda y se escuchan "alto y claro" los tambores y los cantos afrocubanos en las ceremonias religiosas que se ofician abiertamente en cada rincón del país donde profesan esa fe; porque como dice el dicho "Aquí el que no tiene de Congo tiene de Karabalí". El "peliagudo" tema de la intolerancia religiosa cesó por completo a raíz de la visita de su Santidad el Papa Juan Pablo II y pasamos de un día a otro de ser Ateos a ser Laicos. 
Y para mí el aprender a cantar y componer mis canciones al son de los tambores se convirtió en un estilo de vida. Es mi terapia contra la desidia, y es una tabla de salvamento contra el estrés y la locura de estos tiempos.

## <center>My Sound</center> 
<center>(Sound Spaces Initiative)</center>

**Hello dear Hivers... This is my first incursion in this Holos-Lotus community motivated by the initiative of my friend @mosa71.** 

Since I was a child I always liked music; but above all things what I have always liked the most... is singing. I owe that in great part to my father, who in his youth sang with a tremendous "bomba". He played the bongo and the Marímbula, -a kind of substitute for the double bass, very much used in traditional Cuban music-. And my brother Orestes, of whom I have already said in other posts that he was the pianist of a famous Cuban musical band of the 70's, "Los Barbas". When I was 7 or 8 years old, as soon as I came home from school, I would immediately drop my suitcase full of books and start singing with him, accompanying me on the piano. We had a lot of fun doing it and sharing that unforgettable quality time together, which my father always joined to close "with a flourish" in a sort of brilliant improvisations. This was the foundation on which a family and musical harmony was built, that magical spirit that still lingers deep in my heart. 

Actually, "commercial" music, designed and calculated to sell, never "made my hair stand on end". And as the years went by I discovered that my real enthusiasm was inclined towards Cuban popular music with its great Soneros, Guaracheros, Boleristas and "Filineros". Today I can proudly confess that what really "drove me crazy" in that stage of my innocence; every time I listened to the radio or saw them on TV with their rhythmic drums and voices so natural and full of energy and feeling... were the exponents of our rich and varied Afro-Cuban folklore, which of course my father loved.... 

My parents were Catholics, and we lived in an area of the "Vedado" neighborhood where there was no open relationship with Afro-Cuban magic-religious music. In Cuba for a long time religions (as a whole) were frowned upon by the government, practiced in secret and passed down through the family. It is not clear to me that they were forbidden by law, but what I remember very well is that if you were a declared "religious", it defined in a big way how your life was going to be and the advantages that you would not have. Just to say that my parents -who did not belong to the "party" and always had responsibilities in their workplaces far below their intellectual capacities- in the 70's I was baptized in a Catholic Church on the sly so they would not be fired from their jobs. With this what I want is that you can imagine that to witness a "Toque de Tambor Batá de Fundamento", a "Cajón espiritual a los muertos" or simply; a good rumba... you had to get into "La Caliente" that is... go to the most humble neighborhoods, or to the neighborhoods that at that time were considered marginal.  At the age of 35 years old, I dedicated myself to search in those neighborhoods and neighborhoods for all the musical information on the subject in pursuit of the dream of learning from those who really know, and to "drink" if they allowed me to do so "Directly from the source". 

Although my soul was that of a "Negrón" in love with that music; I was trapped in the body of a "Blanquito pelú" with a hippie look; and I confess that it was not easy for me to gain the trust of those defenders of that great cultural legacy. To show me their musical secrets and besides, as I was not "religious" and had no intention of being so, they did not understand why I wanted to learn that. Simply put, what I wanted was to imbibe that rhythmic concept and learn its different melodic twists to fuse it with Jazz and thus create an authentic style to spice up the music that was simmering inside me, in other words... I was looking for my sound. 

I tell you, I was even once kicked out of a party, where no religious ceremony was being practiced (I clarify), simply because they didn't understand -What is "he" doing here? -Hahahahahahahahahahahaha-. With this persistence that has always accompanied me -God willing- throughout my life. The education that my parents gave me and an unwavering interest, focused only on the goal of learning this musical concept that comes from those that I also consider part of my ancestors, I gained the respect, friendship and affection of everyone, even those who rejected me at the beginning and I take this space to thank them for how much they helped me and all that I could learn from them. 

What I am telling you was a long time ago; more than 30 years ago. Now in my Cuba, religions are in fashion and Afro-Cuban drums and songs are heard "loud and clear" in the religious ceremonies that are openly officiated in every corner of the country where they profess that faith; because as the saying goes "Here, he who is not from Congo is from Karabali". The "thorny" issue of religious intolerance ceased completely after the visit of His Holiness Pope John Paul II and we went from one day to another from being Atheists to being Laymen. 
And for me learning to sing and compose my songs to the sound of drums became a way of life. It is my therapy against idleness, and it is a life-saving plank against the stress and craziness of these times.
