School diaries: The elves

In autumn, when you find yourself walking through a forest that is slowly going to sleep for the winter, be careful. As you step above the fallen leaves and hear the cracking noises under your shoes, you might scare away the forest elves. You know, the ones who like to curl up in piles of orange leaves and get their hair all messy with them!!

Sometimes they hide behind the trees and wait for someone to pass by. They like to examine people who come to explore the forest, people like you and me, people like my little second graders who love to get crafty and get their hands dirty with colored markers and glue!

These little ones did an excellent job the other day making autumn forest elves for our classroom Art exhibition! They painted, they cut out, they glued and most importantly, they enjoyed what they did!

Our autumn forest now has eight new inhabitants to live among the trees and play with our hedgehogs. Those naughty elves watch us while we're having our lessons and play tricks on the hedgehogs in the forest. They can be a handful, but they are a really adorable handful. I believe we need to find them new friends in our next Art lesson. That would probably keep them busy and get them behave, don't you agree?
