Building Up Your Desired Future

Many years ago when I was much younger, during one of my practice lessons on farming, my mentor pointed out a particular fault in the seeds that I bought for planting. Well, I insisted that it didn't matter and it will not affect the harvest what will come from it. I went ahead and planted the seeds, when the harvest time came, I was so disappointed with the harvest and I ran back to my mentor to complain to him. He looked at me and calmly said "the harvest that you will reap in the future is a function of the seeds that you have sown in the present." Those words sank into me and I quickly realized that the future does not just happen automatically on its own, we are actually the ones that create it by our actions of the past and present.

One thing to know is that things (particularly great things) do not just happen by chance. For them to happen, someone somewhere must take actions to make them happen. If you want to have a good future, you should not leave it to fate or by chance or have the mentality of "what will be will be." You will be surprised that what will be may not be until you make it to be. The cumulative of your actions of today will build up to what your future will be. This is also the same way that the cumulative of your past has charted the course for your today.

As you take actions today, you should not only put your mind on today but also consider the consequences in the future. For example, in the area of spending and finances, there is the kind of expenditure you will make today and it may hamper your tomorrow. It is true that the actions that you took in the past may have been the reason behind your major challenges of the present but the good news is that there is hope of rectifying it by taking good actions today so that your tomorrow will be great. If you want your tomorrow to be great, then it is left for you to work it out yourself. Make plans towards it and give in your best towards the fulfilment.

In academics for example, for someone to be a career professional - like doctor, engineer, lawyer, etc, the person must take the first step by entering college to pursue the degree. If he sits at one corner and profess that he wants to be a lawyer without going to law school, he will end up being frustrated because no one will gift him the profession and it will not happen to him by chance. In the same way, what you want to achieve is your goal but you have to work towards it in order for it to be actualized. More so, a goal that is not worked on will remain in its state of dormancy. Remember this Newton's law of motion (as paraphrased) -

> An object will remain in its state of dormancy until you apply force to it

This same thing applies to successes in life; it will remain a mirage until you put in work and actions. It is worthy to note that, just as success does not answer to wishes, a great tomorrow does not also answer to wishes. If success answers to just wishes, then every single human would have been successful. But for success to come, you have to put in work. Always remember that the idea is not to look successful or to appear to be successful but to actually be successful, and as such, you should get your hands busy with work.

There is a popularly quoted proverb is this part of the world that says:

> It is after you have gotten your hands busy with work that you will be able to get your mouth busy with eating

What this simply means is that you are the single must determining factor of how your tomorrow will turn out to be. If you sow good actions today through the work of your heads, you will eat of the benefits tomorrow and it will form part of your success story tomorrow.
