A few months back, I travelled to attend a particular meeting in another state with a friend of mine. When we got to the destination, we decided to go and have our lunch in a nearby restaurant. We were to have a very common cuisine, but the way the food was served and decorated made so much sense. In fact, we stayed for about 1 week in the state for the meeting, and we never missed eating in the restaurant twice a day until we left the state. The only thing that attracted us was the unique way they did the very common thing in a very uncommon way. This shows that for success to happen, you have to do things uncommonly.

If you do what everyone else does in the same way that they do it, how then will you stand out and be different from others? You must not need to do an alien thing or something out of the blues, but the little things that you do and the common things can be done differently and it will produce a different result. A friend of mine once said that "what makes people expert is not necessarily doing a different thing, but doing what has been perceived as common, in an uncommon way." The truth is that everyone can be outstanding, but only if they choose to stand out in their approach.
Everyday we live, we are exposed to countless and almost infinite opportunities, but some of them may not even look like opportunities. Right from what you do daily, you can still figure out ways to do it differently and make something unique out of it. Take for example; as a business person, you may be selling what many others are selling, but the way you package and market your own may be what will make the difference and may even lead to unimaginable success. A lot of people that have made it big in the business world learnt to do things differently and it made them to stand out.
For people that grew up in this part of the world, you would probably have known what kpekere (spiced unripe plantain chips) is. In fact, many people prepare it even in road-sides and people would just buy and ate on the go. It was some months back that a friend of mine shared his vision of repackaging kpekere in a redesigned ziploc bag with his name printed on the bag. I gave him support and he started. Adorably, he is doing excellently well in it and has taken over his neighbourhood and people would leave other vendors to patronise him simply because he moved to do things differently. This is success for him.
You may not have the full support that you may require to start something big, but with what you have, you can start and do something differently. You will be surprised that when you start and keep going, what you never thought you could achieve will become cheap possibility within the time frame that you could not imagine. The uniqueness of what you do is basically hinged on its difference from what others do, and it is what determines success. There should be something to give you an edge; something that should make people leave others and look for you - something unique.

I have a friend that makes slippers who lived within our neighbourhood. He was the one that made slippers for me and I introduced many others to him. After a while, he relocated out of the state to another state but we still contract him to make slippers for us because of how good he is and how he would make common slippers look uniquely uncommon. He would make the slippers and waybill it to us and we paid for waybill but we didn't mind because he knows the art really well. There are other slippers makers but we chose him simply because of his uniqueness. This is what you get when you do things differently and uniquely.
A lot of people are chasing after success, but it is right before them staring them in the face. If you focus less on chasing after the supposed big things and focus more on the little things that matter, you will discover a lot of opportunities in them. I remember a time when a particular program was held by the state government with the theme "from trash to treasure," where they taught people on how to recycle waste materials and earn money from it. A lot of people started it and they are really earning from it. This shows how the little things that people overlook can be a major source of success if you will attempt to do things differently.
