At a point in your life, people will step on your toes and they will offend you either willingly or unwillingly. In all these, however, there is still a place of forgiveness, not because you approved of what they did wrong nor because they deserve it but because you deserve your inner peace.

You will agree with me that there is an inner peace that comes when you know that you are not bearing grudge in your heart towards someone else and that you have a very clear conscience towards them. Forgiveness should not be what you do when you feel like but it should be a mandate as long as your peace is important to you. You do not forgive and still remember the offence. Forgiveness is total when the offence is also forgotten. It does not mean that the person automatically becomes your friend but at least you do not count them as enemy.

If you bear grudge against someone and you suddenly bump into them, believe me, your anxiety level will heighten on the spot and you heart will skip a beat. You see, forgiving people actually does a greater good to you than it does to the person that offended you. If people will forgive you when you wronged them, then you have an obligation to forgive others. To think that you have not offended others is to think of yourself as being perfect which is an offence on its own.

The truth remains that humans have not yet attained perfection and as such, we should expect people's flaws to come into play every now and then and this may lead to offences. If you have this in mind, then you will know how to limit your expectations of perfection from them and then you will not find it difficult to forgive them when they do wrong.

Most times, if you look deeply at what you call offence of people, you will understand that you may have even done worse than they did if you were placed in that same position and in their shoes. This is why you have to look beyond the peripheral and look at the intention behind what they did. It may not be in their intention to offend you but it just happened that you picked offence by what they did. You have to learn the act of forgiving people.

There are sometimes that you may be the one that was actually the offender but thinking that it was someone else that offended. In that case, bearing unforgiveness is indirectly bearing it against yourself. For forgiveness to be complete, it has to cover self-forgiveness too. Believe me, if you find it difficult to forgive yourself for the offences of yesterday, then forgiving others will be practically impossible.
