In this present era, a lot of people think that happiness lies in the more possessions you acquire. In fact, they tend to believe that having more money, more power, more achievements can create that feeling of happiness. However, when they get these, they will still want to go for more and the cycle continues, while their desires become insatiable. What they fail to understand is that happiness does not necessarily come from the abundance of one's possessions, but from simplicity. The seemingly small things that a lot of people neglect may trigger an unimaginable feeling of happiness.

A friend of mine, during one of our virtual group meetings some days ago, dropped a very insightful line. He said "where a lot of people focus on to draw happiness from may not be where the happiness truly lies. You just have to clear away the desperation to get more, and give way for what truly matters." You will be surprised how a lot of people submerge their entire life in the pursuit or material things, so much so that they will not even take time to appreciate the little things of life that matters a great deal. You may not have everything you want, but there are things that you have that should create the feeling of happiness within you, you only need to appreciate them. The power of simplicity.

It is worthy to note that the simplicity that leads to happiness is actually a state of the mind. Someone may have a very massive possession and still be eaten up with the desperation to acquire more. While someone else may not even have as much, yet they will be happy and satisfied with it. This is why, what happens to an individual, begins from the mindset. You have to make a choice to focus your mind on the essentials and on what you have control of, while letting go of the unnecessary and what you cannot control.

While I was coming home a few days back, it was already starting to drizzle, so I was rushing to get back home before the rain gets serious. Then I noticed a group of children playing football just by the corner of the street. The football was not coordinated, they did not even have a goalpost, they were odd number; 5 in number, so they cannot even make a complete team. This drew my attention and I paused a bit to watch them, not minding the rain that was fast approaching. One person would dribble, then pass to the other person and it continued that way. They were not actually playing to score any goal because there was no goalpost, but they were having so much fun. That was when I realized that it does not cost much to create happiness, and it can be created from even the very little things of life.

Simplicity covers a lot of things about life. When you have fewer commitments, you will be focused more and avoid distractions. When you start focusing on the simple things of life, you will be surprised at the level of freedom you will operate in. The less you are tied to chasing after the material things of life, the more freedom you enjoy. Simplicity helps you to break free from the mindset that you need luxury in order to be happy. If you learn contentment, you will discover that what you have is actually enough and can make you happy.

Living a life of simplicity helps you to appreciate and be grateful of what you have. It reminds you that you are not competing against anyone nor are you under desperation for luxury, but that you should value your own journey and how far you have come. This is when you will begin to see beauty in ordinary moments, and be better fulfilled in life. Just to remind you; fulfilment does not come when you have most of everything you ever wanted, but it comes when you can make the most of what you have. This is where the true satisfaction of life lies.
