Managing Disagreement Effectively

As long as you live and interact with people, you cannot stop people from disagreeing to your point of view and you will also find yourself in a point when you may not agree to someone else's point of view too. Do you force your opinion down the throat of others and may end up not only losing friends but creating enemies, or do you just agree to disagree? The truth is, as you encounter people and as you grow and mature, you will discover that everything is not revolving around you being right. When you discover this, you will be more open to welcome other people's opinions.

If at every point and you are struggling to be right, then you are far from being mature. The question is; what will be your gain if after you have fought to be right and you end up being cruel and losing friendship? This is just like someone struggling to win a fist fight but in the long run, he will lose the bigger war. More often than not, what brings disagreement is difference in opinion. But you have to understand that everyone, by default, has their own opinion which they are entitled to.

You may not agree to an opinion, but it does not stop you from welcoming it. A point will come when you will understand that you can listen to someone's opinion even if you do not like it. When you are confronted with an argumentative situation, you do not have to fight to win the argument if if will end up making you a cruel person. You may just take a bow. But in the real sense, you have not lost the argument because you gained something bigger than the argument - peace.

In life, there are times that you need to sacrifice one thing or the other for life to go on. For example, you can sacrifice being right in order to be kind. Of course, at the end of the day, no one will remember you for the times you were right or the times you won an argument, but they will remember you for being kind. So you see, if all you think of is to be right, even at the expense of your humanity, then you still have a long way to go. When you are faced with two choices: either to be right and lose your humanity, or to be kind, then the latter would be preferable.

There are some actions that you know that if taken, will hamper your humanity, then wisdom demands that you should stay clear of such actions. Before you take an action, try to ask yourself if your conscience would be okay with it in the long run. In your dealings with anyone, always try to show niceness to them. Your niceness and your acts of kindness should be to all and not limited to a selected few. It is true that they may not agree with you in a few things, but as they say "varieties add spices to life." So their own opposite view about life should be seen as part of the varieties of life.

There are many people that are already going through insanely tough and rough times. So before you pick conflict over someone's opinion, ask yourself if it will be worth it. More so, ask if the potential result will be what you will be proud of. If at the end of the day and you will not be happy with the result of an action, then you should not undertake that action in the first place. This reminds me of a very insightful and thought-provoking statement that was made by a friend during one of our conversations many years back as I conclude with it. He said and I paraphrase:

> The best way to prevent the result of a negative action is to avoid the action totally.

Bringing it into the perspective here, I will say that you can choose to allow something to go (maybe an argument or just agreeing to disagree) in order to prevent a greater evil (conflict) from occurring.
