Protecting Your Metamask Wallet From Attacks
<div class="text-justify">

In the recent past, there have been cases of crypto wallets getting attacked by bad actors and people's hard-earned monies lost. This concern has become worrisome that a drastic measure has to be taken to prevent cyberpunks from gaining unauthorized access into someone's crypto wallets. Here, I will list out a few tips, that if followed, could go a long to reduce the eventualities of wallet attacks.

### 1. Beware of the sites you interact with your Metamask

Some websites may appear to be legit but they may be operated by bad actors as phishing websites to steal your details and gain access to your cryptos. Before you connect any website to your Metamask, you have to be sure that it is legit. More so, watch out for spelling errors. A few months ago, a friend of mine came across a phishing website that was made to look like a popular Decentralized Exchange. However, what saved him was that he bookmarked the original one and quickly confirmed from it. Amazingly, the fake one has a hidden spelling error.

For the DEXs that you use often, you need to bookmark them so that you will not have to input them every now and then, which can save you the eventualities of entering the wrong site.

### 2. Log out of your Metamask when not in use and use security softwares on your system.

When you are not using your Metamask at the moment, make it a point of duty to log out of it, so that anyone will not gain unauthorized access to it. More so, try to limit the use of open WiFi connection, some of them can eavesdrop into your personal details and harvest your wallet details. Always make use of trusted network.

Furthermore, try to install and update antivirus softwares and other trusted security softwares on your system to prevent cyber attacks by bad actors. More so, you can also put on your firewall to prevent a certain level of attacks. Here's a list of few antivirus softwares that you can go for:

- McAfee
- Avast
- Bitdefender
- Kaspersky
- Norton
- ESET
- Webroot
- Trend Micro
- Malwarebytes, etc.

### 3. Revoking spending access.

In the event that you mistakenly grant access to unwanted tokens or smart contracts in your Metamask, you can easily revoke those access so that they cannot spend your funds. To do this, you have to go to this site https://allowance.beefy.finance (note, this is to revoke access on BSC networks only).

Once you have entered the site and connected your Metamask, you will see the list of tokens or smart contracts that you have granted access to spend your tokens. There, you can click on the sites to revoke access or you can click on "revoke all" to revoke all the access. Then you will authorize the transaction from your Metamask with gas fee of a few cents.

### 4. Do not reveal or share your recovery phrase with anyone.

Okay I know we must have known about this; your recovery phrase is exclusively yours, so do not reveal it to anyone under any guise. Remember, Metamask customer service will never require you to divulge your security phrase to them. More so, any site that you want to connect to and it asks you for your security phrases, you should just know that they have malicious intention.

Even when writing down your phrase, you have to write it where people around you will not guess. You will be surprised that, sometimes, the people around you may be your greatest enemy, so beware.

### 5. Diversify your funds

Wallet diversification simply means distributing your crypto assets into various wallets instead of holding them in one wallet. The risk of holding your assets in one wallet is bigger, because in the event that it is attacked, your entire crypto assets will be at risk. However, if you have multiple wallets and one gets attacked, the loss will be reduced. Remember this:

> Do not put all your eggs in one basket.

I guess this adage also has practical applications here. You can have a separate wallet for trading, another one for airdrops, then another one for hodling. In all these, your watchword should be "security consciousness".
