There is a very thin line (if there is any at all) between a sense of accomplishment and pride. A story was told of a young lady that finished top of her class in college. Since the inception of the school, she's the first female to bag in first class in Material and Metallurgical Engineering. Coupled with her beauty, academic acumen, accent and carriage, she seemed to be "on top of the world".

As everyone would expect, she was the first choice of many recruitment agencies and companies nationwide, but one thing cropped up - "pride". Within a period of 4 years after graduation, she had hopped in-between 10 different jobs without holding down anyone.

At the end of the 4th year, fate smiled on her and she got a mouth-watering job with a top oil servicing company. But just like you would guess right, after a while of being there, the sense of accomplishment rose up again and she started seeing herself as being way more qualified than her colleagues - of course, this showed in her character.

She was quick to forget that, sometimes, availability and approachability is more than capability. Her insolence got so bad that at a point, she challenged orders from the boss because she also saw herself as "knowing better". Well, when her boss saw her as a threat to the company, she was shown the way out.

I know some of you will be quick to condemn the lady's act of pride, but the truth is, so many others are also guilty of over-massaged ego. Sometimes, you may feel you deserve more than you currently got or that more attention should be focused on you. May I tell you that life; and everyone else; does not owe you fairness - because even life isn't entirely fair.

The truth is; ego, most times, is a good virtue - at least it places your confidence level aright, but if you take it a little too far, then it will turn into a full-blown pride. To keep pride in check, you should always remind yourself that whatever you think you have achieved is a privilege and should not be considered as a birth right. With this mindset, you will be able to keep yourself cool.
