Retaining Your True Identity
<div class="text-justify">

It is quite common for people to feel the unnatural pressure of desiring to become someone else. Most times, friends, peers and even social media can cause one to begin to lose their self-identity and attempting to become who they are not. A lot of people, after going through social media, which most of them only show fake lives, will tend to believe that their level is not up to par. The truth is, you will be surprised that you have a better level than many of the people that flaunt flashy things on social media.

Sometimes, you only need to maintain your identity for the sake of your inner peace. More so, if you try to become someone else, you will not only lose your inner peace but your success may be affected - because you will tend to judge yourself by the standards of someone else. You can only find ease when you maintain your true self. There is usually an ease of accomplishment that accompanies doing what you are built to do.

You will agree with me that a fish will have zero struggles when it is in its natural habitat - water. However, if you move the fish to a different habitat, the ease will be turned to struggles and it will not function well. So if a fish allows itself to be pressured by a land creature to leave the water, it will be set to face undue stress. Similarly, if you allow other people's standards to become a yardstick for you, then struggles may become imminent.

Most times, your talents will only manifest when you function in your appropriate place. The great footballers - Pele and Diego Maradona, wrote their names on the history book because of football. Imagine if they had deviated from football and entered another field, maybe swimming, they may not have made as much success as Michael Phelps. In the same way, if Michael Phelps had gone into football, he may not have become one of the greatest Olympic medalists of all times (with a whopping 28 medals). So you see, everyone has a particular place they are created to be.

One thing you should be ware of is external influence. Do not let the world (friends, peers, social media) tell you who you are not, and do not allow them to make you to lose your identity in trying to become like them. The truth is, some of these influencers that you are admiring have bigger problems than you. To become outstanding in a particular field, it may often require you to stand out.

"Standing out" covers a whole lot of things, like standing for what you believe in, standing for your true identity, standing out in your choices. Always remember that it may only take you the ability to stand out in order to become outstanding. When you become conformed to the world, it will not be long and you will start to think like them, and this will prompt you to begin to act like them. Ultimately, you will be set to get the kind of result that they do. However, for you to have an entirely different result, you have to maintain your true self and do things differently. Remember:

> You can only create a difference by being different.

That someone is doing excellently well in a particular field is not an express guarantee that if you enter that field you will do well. You can also do excellently well in yours. You only need to devote time to it and become dedicated to it. After all, everyone can succeed from any field. Success is not judged by other people's standards, so do not lose yourself trying to fit into someone's standards.
