Your worth is always a direct result of your personal development. I remember when a friend of mine applied for a certain position in a particular company and was refused on the grounds he did not met the requirements. What he did was to go and acquire more skills towards that area and developed himself. He developed his skills extensively that at a point, many companies started looking for him including the former company that rejected him. Now he is giving them his own terms and conditions for consideration. You see, all these were because of personal development.

The day you give attention to developing yourself is the day that your success is birthed. The truth is that the whole world is already in intense competition, so you need something to give you an edge so as to be able to stand out. Remember that this goes beyond just certificates. Obviously, there are some places that certificates may get you into, but you will need more than that to be sustained there. As a matter of fact, if the only thing you know is what you went to school to get certificate for, then you are not different from the rest of the people that have the same certificate. You have to look beyond that and develop yourself more.

The Internet and our devices have delivered to us many opportunities that can enable us develop one skill or the other from the comfort of our homes. As you develop yourself, you increase your worth and this will equate to an increase in the value you will add. What people care about is the level of value you can create or add, not the theoretical qualifications that you have. If you observe the recruitment processes of some major tech giants for example, you will see that the requirement are built around skills and not on certificates. This is the reason why, whatever you have studied notwithstanding, you can still go for one skill to back it up with, so as to give you an added advantage.

There are times that it may be the skills that you have acquired that may become your backup plan in the days of eventualities. So personal development also comes with its own advantages because it gives one ready access to a backup plan or a plan B. Take this instance; during the last Covid lockdown, a friend of mine shared something with me. He works in a place but during the lockdown, his place of work was affected by the lockdown rule and their jobs were suspended. However, while in school; a very long time ago; he acquired a particular skill. It was that skill that he fell back on and it was through it that he was able to survive the lockdown while his colleagues were already borrowing just to survive. You see, while he was developing himself by acquiring that skill, he did not know that it will save him one day.

Your relevance is directly related to the value you add, and to add value, you will need to work to continually develop yourself and improve on your skills. The reason for continuity in self development is because the demands of the world is constantly increasing and as such, you will need to constantly develop yourself to match with these demands. It is worth noting that one cannot achieve what he is not prepared for. So if greatness is your ultimate goal, then you should prepare yourself for greatness. It is true that perfection is not yet attained, but the beauty of life is working towards perfection.

Everyone may have a fair start, but what differentiates people in the long run is the capacity they have built over time. It is your absolute prerogative to develop yourself. There are many ways to do that: through acquiring new skills, gaining new knowledge - in books, internet, etc, through communication. In this era that information is readily at everyone's disposal, lack of information is no longer the problem but the willingness to go after the information.
