The Reciprocity Of Respect

It is no doubt that everyone will like to be treated with respect but the big question is, do you also treat others with respect? A good and lasting respect should be earned. When you force people to respect you, it will not last long but when you work your way to earn their respect, it will last.

For you to earn respect, you must also be willing to show respect at all times. Trust me, there is no gain in disrespecting people, rather it has detrimental results. Also know that respect is without recourse to your title nor to your age. The truth is, if you only respect those that are of higher cadre than you, then your respect is questionable and it can be likened to "eye service."

Respect should be able to flow naturally and effortlessly. The moment you need to remind people to respect you, then you have already lost your respect. Your compulsion may force people to fear you but not to respect you: while the later is good, the former is not, and once the position that you are leveraging upon to enforce the fear goes, the fear will also go.

If you want people to respect you, then you have the obligation to show others respect too. If your respect is not to all, then it is not complete. Someone respecting his boss in the office but being grossly disrespectful to the gate man or gardener in the same office is not respectful at all. No wonder the old Igbo (Southeast Nigeria) proverb says and I paraphrase:

> Your respect should be to all or none

Another proverb in the Southwest Nigeria (The Yorubas) says that:

> If you bow down as a sign of respect to great someone, it will not decrease your height.

Trust me, you will not impress anyone by being disrespectful, but everyone will like you and take note of you when you are respectful. Even when people have contrary view and opinion from what you have, it does not warrant you to disrespect them. Remember that differences can always be ironed out without creating a rough atmosphere. Also know that everyone cannot and will not share the same perspective with you, so learn to respectfully welcome people's idea even if you will not implement or agree with it at the end.

The person you treat with disdain today may be the one that have been strategically positioned to help your destiny later in life. If you misuse today's opportunity and do what you like to people because you feel you have the proclivity to do so, tomorrow you may need their help and it may be unforthcoming. Before you treat someone with contempt, remember that as times moves, conditions also change and tables might turn earlier than you can imagine.

That someone is a gate man today does not mean he cannot become a CEO tomorrow. Imagine what will happen when the person you treated cruelly today becomes your source of breakthrough tomorrow, how willing will they be to help you?
