Learn TACTICAL CURATION & why it isn't always best to vote for the popular Steemians!

11 days ago I voted at 100% (with a total of around 5,500 Steem Power behind my vote) for an article written by @jockey entitled: 
[Horse Racing - Corruption & Cruelty : An Insider's Perspective](https://steemit.com/sports/@jockey/horse-racing-corruption-and-cruelty-an-insider-s-perspective)

I placed my vote 30 minutes after he published the article, at which point the pay-out was around $2

As you can see the article payed out a total of $27.48, which was split between author & curators.
## So what did I make from my vote?

My 100% vote would have been worth around $0.80 at that time.

With this in mind, I scanned through my list of curation rewards to find the answer.

As you can see my reward was 1.861 Steem Power, which today equates to $2.80

## So my actual earning from that vote was around $2.

Which is pretty good right?  Though we must bear in mind that the value of Steem has risen a little since I placed that vote.

So, based on this information I can see that if I voted at 100% for 10 articles per day which were all in a similar situation to the one written by @jockey I would looking at $140 a week in curation rewards!

What this says to me is that 10 well placed votes (per day) at 100% are much more effective than 100 votes (per day) for popular articles at a lower percentage.

## This is Tactical Curation!

It is clear to me now that a vote at 100% for an article written by someone without too many regular upvoters is a much more effective vote than for someone who has many regular upvoters.

@jockey has 292 followers and received a total of 47 upvotes for this article, most of which came after I had placed my vote and resteemed him to my own group of 1400 followers. 

Those of you who follow me will already know that I trained @jockey in the art of Steemit (because I knew that his life experience, interests and writing ability made him PERFECT for this platform) and have been supporting him 100% during his first month on the platform, so I am in a very good position now to benefit from his ongoing success.

### Can you see how our willingness to help others comes back to us in spades?

And I love Steemit for that.

## In Conclusion

When choosing the best people to vote for, keep in mind the following questions:

- Are they receiving a low number of upvotes?

- Are they receiving decent pay-out rewards?

- Are the majority of these votes being placed after the 30min point?

If the answer to these questions are all yes, you have found the right person to vote for.  Get your vote in at the 30min mark when your curation rewards are at 100%

Once you have placed your 100% vote at 30mins, then resteem the article to your own network, encouraging your network to do the same, spreading it to as many people as possible.  If you're really keen you could even do some post promotion for them on steemit.chat and Discord!

You may be able to propose your selected article to the [Curation Guild](https://streemian.com/guild/curie/propose/) in Streemian if it fits the following guidelines

nice post @samstonehill!  I'm sure I'm probably not really maximizing my curation rewards, but that's also because I tend to spread "a lot of love" among comments as well.  But it's all good, as I feel that helps me (and others) even more in the long-run.  

I had heard of @curie, but only really learned about the project a few days back when @lindahas, who I've been trying to give a bit of a boost due to the great heart-felt articles she's been writing *(especially as a newbie steemian)*.  Turns out she was recently submitted to @curie by @deserttree and won a full vote *(her post is currently poised to payout over $150)*!  

As you can imagine, she was pretty ecstatic about it!  Write great posts and content, and sooner or later, you will be recognized and appreciated on STEEMIT! :)

I know what you mean about spreading the love amongst comments.  It feels right to do it when appropriate.  Even though you know it is unlikely you will receive any reward for doing so.  

And yes, the Guild are amazing!  They've been around since I started.  And I used them a bunch to boost me many times before my rep went above 52.  I owe them big time.

Am working on the creation of a Guild of my own now.  Designed to curate the work of those who are being guided by my Bali Steemit School, all of whom will fit perfectly into the optimum reward category.  Perhaps you might be interested in joining this guild?  I am looking for a total of 12 people willing to gives upvotes at the value of $1 to our selected posts before resteeming them.

Everyone involved will benefit and as the power of our guild grows we will be able to look beyond those who have been trained by my Bali Steemit school!

unfortunately Sam my votes aren't quite worth that much yet (though they were worth nearly $2 each for a while after HF19), *that* was kind of cool!  :)

Also, I don't tend to be a big resteemer, not directly at least because of the feed clutter.  I generally prefer to "resteem" post links in my comments and posts (when relevant, of course).  Sort of like my version of a resteem with added "color".  Granted, I've resteemed a bit more though since I released <a href="https://steemit.com/steemit/@alexpmorris/ultimate-steemit-post-vote-slider-and-past-payout-monetizer-and-next-here-comes-steemtube">"Hide ReSteems"</a>, but of course it's not something most people are using, well, not *yet* at least!

Are you also planning to post summaries as well, sort of like @happyphoenix does?  I've found his posts great at catching and upvoting posts that I may have otherwise missed earlier on.  Of course, that doesn't work to "maximize" curation rewards, but for me it's all good nonetheless. :)

oh, i misunderstood, i thought 15 min. was the sweet spot (some people say 20, not sure why), but you're saying 30 minutes... but then after 30 minutes it goes down steeply?    I just started playing this game, so yeah, i've just been dividing the dollar amount by the upvotes, so not voting for $100 with 100 votes, but $50 with just 10, etc.  Right?  peace

There is much to learn I am still picking up new tricks every day.  And finding myself quite confused at times!  

But am happy to have done some research now on this particular subject.  I can see that many of the people who were once making a ton of Steem are no longer making so much.  Due to the reality that the curation system  incentivises the support of newcomers.

Yes.  At 30mins or after, 100% of curation rewards are for you. So at the 29min it would be more like 99%  to you 1% to author.  Voting that little bit earlier means you are more likely to ride the wave of other peoples' votes.  Your curation rewards come from those who vote after you.

You are right.  However you only make curation rewards with the people who vote AFTER you.  So if you wait 6 days you are unlikely to catch much steem.  This is why 30mins is the optimum time.

Thanks for the comment.  I should probably have added that I don't actually stick to my own system!  I am driven by my love & respect for certain people and also members of my Facebook group.  There is no incentive for financial gain with them.  I simply enjoy giving :)

But those who wish to look at this as a business venture, will naturally take a different route.

As you say, it's our choice :)

Thanks dude.  I've worked very hard over the last year to gain this knowledge.  I really believe in this platform now and the more people we can get using it, the more likely it is to keep rising in value.  

Am just working on the advert for my Steemit talk at Hubud next Tues.  The organisers want to do a live stream of it on YouTube.  So the talk can be watched live-time through an article on Steemit which will have the YouTube link.

I'm not sure anyone has ever done that before???

That's one of the cool things about Steemit.  It's not too hard to break new ground as it's all still so new!

I still have a long way to go before I'm curating properly. I have this habit of upvoting posts that I read and find value in regardless of whether it already has a load of votes. My VP has been below 40% for the longest time and is mostly always on the 20-30 range ._.

Mine went down to 0% before I realised what was going on!  We live and learn :)

I also love to vote 'on the fly' as it were.  And for comments too.

Tactical curation is not for everyone.  But for sure there is money to be made if the game is played intelligently :)

Wow! I didn't know it can even deplete as I did read it usually recalibrates itself at 25%. I'll probably give tactical curation a go once my SP is actually a little higher because as it is, it barely really registers. Thanks for the post :)
