# End of season   My mother is a big fan of Mango - so much so that, she insists I buy her as long as they are available and good. We have 3-4 trees and that gives good produce - this year, it was pretty good yield. It must have been more than 1000 kgs of Mango this year procured over couple of months. Some of them come early and some late, so that way, we enjoy them for 2-3 months. Afterwards we buy it from market. These trees are not very old. We had one tree that we cut after the super cyclone in 1999 as one branch fell and destroyed the house. That tree as per locals was more than 100 years old and I remember, we used to get so much that a big room was used to keep them. The two best varieties we like the most from the ones in market - [Amrapali](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amrapali_(mango)) and [Chausa](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaunsa), Chausa being the favorite because of its superior taste and smell. Amrapali is produced in our locals, so its a bit cheap, but it comes until late July only. Then in August, I start buying Chausa. She loves it so much that, I buy till its available in the market till late August / early this month. I had bought 10 kg for her, and she just kept in freezer and today while eating the last one, she was asking, if they are available any more. Right now, Chausa from Pakistan is available, but at a price of Rs 550 / kg. So you just get two mangoes max in that. But then they are not tasty as the ones coming from our north side. 2-3 years back, I had bought 1 kg of Pakistan Chausa at 500/kg for the sake of tasting, but I did not like the taste. There are some other varieties still available in market at cheaper price but they are not worth eating because of not so good taste. Mango was a big relief for her as we are going through some traditional practices restricting most of the food because of a death in family ( so many traditions to follow - will post about it). Still two more days to go. This will pass through. Here are some images that I had taken during the season but never was able to post. The brilliant and dazzling color of the ripen mangoes in the tree amazes me.     Here are some images, from our procurement. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, we could not distribute it to all friends and families. Every year, Mom loads them in big bags ( almost 25- 30 kgs) and tells us to go and give at their home. It's time consuming but enjoying to meet family members. This year, few got it, but they got other's share - 3-4 bags.

We have mango shortage in Suriname, I'd buy a 50kg rice sack full of mangoes if you were here in Suriname π. It's funny there is little food available in the markets, and hardly ever mangoes, but yet our street is full of unpicked mango trees. The locals here would rather charge us a high price than to let us have them for free, even though the fruit is falling in the canal every day, going to waste. In Cambodia, mangoes never go to waste, so this behavior is shocking for my family and I.

Mangoes! Yes please! :) Definitely one of my very favorite tropical fruits. Again, I donΒ΄t know these Indian cultivars of yours but in Mexico, we usually bought a cultivar called ataulfo. Small, golden, elongated but extremely sweet, juicy and delicious. Here in this shot that I took in a local supermarket, they look like potatoes, I know :D but they are really fantastic...  So jealous that you grow these amazing fruits in your garden. What a blessing.

I miss cheap fruit. Fruit in Tokyo is super expensive. I used to buy mangos on the street in other countries for spare change. I am sure, my next post would fit there best - a culture which is followed when someone dies in family. Will join. I like lychee very much - but as far as I remember, I used to pick from trees when I was in class 5 in a remote area. these mangoes are quite small in size, the mangoes sold in Delhi are really huge, it could be 3 times the size of these mangos. But i have no doubt that, these mangoes will be much sweeter than the ones available in Delhi.
