After what was an epic ending to an epic saga of ten years, Marvel fans were left wondering about the future of their beloved characters and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole as they were still reeling from the ending of Avengers: Endgame. 

It was known that many of their favourite characters would return in future films, the first being Spider-Man in the movie Spider-Man: Far From Home, set to release on July 2. What was not known, was that Avengers: Endgame would itself get a re-release.

It was as a wonderful surprise for Marvel fans when Kevin Feige, Marvel chief, said that they would be re-releasing the Endgame movie soon with additional footage. There is now supposed to be a deleted scene, a tribute to Stan Lee and a few other things after the end credits.

This comes just in time as the movie was really beginning to slow down in terms of daily collections, both domestic and worldwide and it had still not been able to beat Avatar for the number one spot.

Endgame was released on April 25 and the box office numbers since then have been absolutely huge. It broke a ton of records and it was poised to beat Avatar to claim the number one spot in the list of highest grossing movies of all time. 

But after almost two successful months, and earning $2,744,012,261 according to Boxofficemojo.com, it still falls short by about $43 million. Avatar has been at the number one spot since 2009 earning $2,787,965,087.

There is speculation that this could be one of the reasons the movie is being re-released. With renewed enthusiasm among fans, the $43 million needed to surpass Avatar could be easily achieved. 

But the sequels to Avatar that are in the works, the first of which is set to be released in 2021, might end up giving a tough competition to Endgame if it manages to break to that first spot.
