Thatβs how we have managed to make it this far; by continuously pushing the boundaries of our knowledge which has in turn equipped us with means to live the lives that we do today. </p> <p>We have always had questions and we will probably always do. Always having somethings unanswered may be taken as a curse or a boon, depending on how you see it. For me personally, it is what gives our existence a meaning, a purpose. </p> <p>One such question, and it is one of my favourites, is this: Are we alone in the universe? Well, if you think about it, it is not an unanswerable question. The universe is so vast, beyond anything our brains can allow us to imagine, that thinking we are alone would be nothing but human arrogance. It is statistically impossible that we are alone. </p> <p>But hereβs the thing. Until we make contact, we will always be intrigued by the possible nature of these extra terrestrial beings, whoever, whatever and wherever they might be. Just imagine if they suddenly arrived one day, what would we do? Do we even have a plan as one human race to take the necessary steps?</p> <h1>Arrival</h1> <p><img src="https://i.imgsafe.org/dad550f5a3.jpg" width="600" height="313"/></p> <p><a href="http://www.wakingtimes.com/2015/06/18/nasa-openly-admits-alien-life-exists-get-ready-for-disclosure/">Image Credits</a></p> <p>If you have watched the movie βArrivalβ you may be aware of some of the things that may happen if they just show up one day. There will be a lot of confusion, chaos and the entire world will be at a standstill.</p> <p>The fate of humanity will depend on our visitors. If they turn out to be benevolent, our lives will change forever and it will be the biggest change we or any future generations would ever see because it would mean that our understanding of the universe (and possible of technology) multiplies a million folds if we are able to share information with them.</p> <p>On the other hand, if they turn out to be malevolent, well, you have watched enough movies to know what happens. It is highly unlikely that we would be able to stop them as they would be far more advanced than us and it could mean an end to our whole race and possibly Earth even. </p> <p>In any case, I think it would be wise for us to establish a protocol when and if they do arrive. This will make sure that there is no confusion as to how things should proceed because it may not be in the hands of only one country. The visitors may choose to land in several countries at once. Therefore a unified plan is very necessary. </p> <h1>Protocol</h1> <p>So, do we have a fixed set of protocols in place for any such event that might occur? Well, officially no. No country in the world and not even the UN has prescribed any plan of action. So, there are no official protocols in place.</p> <p>But what we do have, is a set of guidelines for these governments to come up with protocols if ever a need arises. But these guidelines are only for what we would do when we detect a signal or a transmission from the extra terrestrials and not if they actually arrive on Earth.</p> <p>These guidelines come from SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence). SETI is a collective scientific effort throughout the world who are monitoring any possible extra-terrestrial signals or transmissions from an alien civilisation. </p> <p>The SETI committee of the international academy of astronauts have in place a fixed set of protocols for post detection action. If they just show up, I'm happy to make the assumption that they are benevolent and will be aware that most of the leadership are certainly not the ones to talk to. If they are malevolent, we won't know about it because obviously they'll be talking to the fascists in charge....negotiating our continued slavery whilst a select few psychopaths go on to bigger and better things. ;)

As you said, statistics dictate their must be other forms of life out there somewhere, and it would be arrogant in the extreme to think that humanity is in any way special. First contact would be incredible. I can't even begin to imagine what a transformative event it would be. Personally, I'd be happy just to live long enough to see a manned mission to Mars, or maybe even proof of simple life on Jupiter's moons or something. I bet first world governments, at least, have some sort of secret contact protocol. Governments are nothing if not good at coming up with contingency plans for every possible scenario, no matter how unlikely. I'd like to think any such alien visitors would be peaceful, simply because of their advanced technological state. Chances are good that a warlike species such as ours probably would have self-destructed long before becoming capable of exploring beyond their own solar system. But I suspect that whatever the truth is about the nature of extrasolar intelligence, it is far different and stranger than what's portrayed in the movies.

That is very, very well put! I agree with you 100%. I am hoping the governments do indeed have a plan because even if this may seem unlikely, it could still happen. And I too think that any species that has reached such a high level of technological advancements wouldn't want anything from us. Why would they? They would already have all that they need and more. To think that they would want something form us is just human thinking. So, there is a high chance that such ETs will be peaceful. I just hope that before I die, I witness at least something of significance regarding space exploration. It encourages me to know that we are actively looking at Mars to turn it into our second home and other missions to space.

It feels like there haven't been any real significant milestones in human exploration since I was born, although there have been plenty of robotic / unmanned advancements. I will die a happy man if I can see a human walking on Mars before I go. If we do manage to expand out into the solar system someday, I kind of wonder how those people of the far future will regard the sci-fi novels of today. How much of what we read will turn out to be insightful prediction, and how much just fanciful dreaming? Have you ever read the Rama series by Arthur C. Clarke and Gentry Lee? Those are the best books I've ever read concerning first contact and the enigmatic wonder of alien encounters.
