I think it is pretty safe to say that most people in the world love to hear music. I say ‘most’ and not ‘all’ because I know a few people that don’t. Anyways, music has been an integral part of our human species dating back to perhaps the earliest of human presence.

The earliest evidence of a musical instrument (a flute made from bird bone and mammoth ivory) dates back to some 40,000 years and this is just what we have discovered. Who knows when the ‘concept’ of music found its inception in the human history.

Regardless, the effects of music on us humans and even animals cannot be denied. Science has been studying the same and have come up with interesting results over the years explaining what exactly music does to our brains.

1. It Affects Our Emotions

This is one of the most common ways we notice the effects of music on ourselves. The kind of music we listen has the ability to change our mood. When you are listening to happy music, you are more likely to feel happy and when you’re listening to sad music, you are likely to feel the same.

Now, it might not always happen and no two people are affected the same way, meaning that there are always exceptions. But you might have noticed how you start tapping your feet when an upbeat music is playing in the vicinity or when you want to ‘move’ with the rhythm of an awesome dance song.

2. Music Can Bring People Together

Historically, music was perhaps a social activity at the times when human species was divided into small number of groups before large civilisations came to be. It is not difficult to imagine our ancestors dancing and singing around a fire and having a fun time.

Music can really have that effect of ‘togetherness’ in us humans. That is why there are ‘theme songs’. Remember when songs like “Wavin’ flag” and “waka waka” were released at the time of 2010 FIFA world cup? It instilled a sense that we are all a part of the same thing. We are by nature, social animals and deep within we are always in search of being a part of something bigger and music helps us do that.

3. Learning To Play Instruments Improves Several Skills

You might have heard this one before. Learning to play any new musical instrument has huge benefits for the brain. Many studies have been conducted which show similar developments especially in children.

Usually, an improvement in motor skills, reasoning skills, analytical skills (relating to finding patterns), verbal IQ and many other skill sets are shown in people who start learning a musical instrument for a certain period of time or who practise it daily.

As a result it is generally believed that people who learn to play musical instruments or do it regularly are smarter and more creative than people who don't. (Of course this isn't applicable in every person).

4. Music Can Increase Concentration

Have you seen people powering through their to-do list or working in the office or painting something or even doing mathematics while listening to music? I do this frequently too and the effects of music on concentration are quite noticeable.

Usually it is the instrumental music that helps in doing so while music which also have lyrics may end up distracting rather than helping you focus. So, the next time you are too distracted to work, turn on some classical music!

So, suffice it to say, listen to music, people! With that, I leave you with a wonderful song that I 're-discovered' recently.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCtzkaL2t_Y

I've had an ongoing hypothesis (never really ever got into seriously testing it or researching it) that music has the power to reshape neural pathways in such a way as to "bring out a new man/ woman", as in the ability to literally create an entirely new personality/ identity and to erase all the emotional baggage tied to the old identity. However, I'm not sure if this is true of every type of music and I believe it only has this kind of power when one listens to it in a deeply meditative state, WITH the intention to be "re-born". I have a few theories as to why this could be true. Many people who've taken strong hallucinogens, such as LSD, will attest to experiencing their senses in direct opposite to that of their "normal" conscious (awake) state of awareness. As an example, there are accounts of individuals "tasting" or "feeling" colors. Such a thing doesn't compute in our intellect, but anyone who has had that experience will testify that it was convincing as "real" in the moment it was experienced. I've personally experienced similar types of "altered perception" when becoming lost in music. My thought on it is that the "layers" and beats within the music provides both the perfect focus mechanism to reach a highly meditative state (focus almost entirely removed from normal conscious processes) and a natural way to boost certain brain chemicals that significantly alter the mood or "mind atmosphere". Take these two things together and you effectively have a lot of attention directed at mostly "uncharted" consciousness (unconscious mind?) and, *perhaps*, many psychological tools made available that were never before accessible. When the mind is sufficiently calm, yet set on a mission to right past wrongs, it seems to me that awareness naturally broadens to the point that everything there is to understand about how we've wronged ourselves can be seen all at once and the path to right simultaneously becomes clear, as if trillions of computations are being made and understood right before our eyes. This state of "enlightenment" is probably achievable from a dedicated meditation regimen , alone, but my feeling is that music's ability to help us "lose ourselves" amplifies and expedites all the psychological processes that have to occur before that "a ha!" moment can happen. Just like it's hard to compute or explain how we can taste colors when under the influence of various drugs, yet those experiences have significance and can forever change the psychology of those individuals who've experienced it, the same can be said of this experience of insight into one's own ignorance and spontaneous enlightenment as to how to be one's "highest self", without the necessity of endlessly analyzing memories/ thoughts or sifting through feelings/ emotions.

Wow! Thanks for this wonderful and insightful comment! I have read a lot of times in various articles and books that music may indeed help reshape neural networks though nobody can truly prove it. Personally, I feel like music can indeed have that affect. After all, Nikola Tesla said that if you want to understand the universe, think in terms of energy and frequency. Well, we all know that music is a form of energy and different type of music has different frequency. We are made of atoms and if string theory is correct they are made of strings that vibrate. SO, it is possible that particular frequencies of particular music can affect the atoms in the brain and cause them to rearrange in a way so as to give birth to an entirely new person. Philosophically speaking, even though if music doesn't have a 'physical' effect on our body or mind, it might have a deeply philosophical one causing a person to think in an entirely new way just as you gave an example of people being able to 'feel' and 'taste' colors which change their lives forever because they just 'know' there is something more to our life than meets the eye. So it is entirely possible that music has a similar effect. Thanks for such an insightful idea. :)

> After all, Nikola Tesla said that if you want to understand the universe, think in terms of energy and frequency. > SO, it is possible that particular frequencies of particular music can affect the atoms in the brain and cause them to rearrange in a way so as to give birth to an entirely new person. Indeed. And it's my stance that, if we adequately understand ourselves and the inherent power of our consciousness, we can will ourselves to use the many "vibrational tools" in a safe and effective manner, which controls the amount and types of change that can occur, guiding the energy as we will it -- in hypnotherapy, they use the term "critical factor" (CF) as the parts of the brain that instinctually protects against unwanted psychological conditioning and, while I'm uncertain whether experts would agree, I'm of the opinion that CF can be shaped by desire and will. Thought, itself, is a movement of energy as is emotion (energy in motion). The question this leaves us with is whether or not freewill is the real state of human consciousness; can we control the "direction" of these internal energies, which, themselves, lead to different branches of external (physical) actions and, eventually, the formation of new habits? I lean towards yes. Another question that comes to mind: assuming that we can will to change through conscious efforts such as "self-hypnosis", is there a "natural reset" point built into consciousness that can be reached by willing to not strive in any way for particular changes/ conditions (freeing the mind of desires or aims to will things)? In other words, if we give up trying to control everything in our lives (suspend our will), from our thoughts to our actions, is there a consequent default state? Again, I believe there is. The default, or what I prefer to call the "natural state", is the end goal of meditation (release from {ego/ control/ root of stress/ root of irrational fears} to reveal the "raw", unconditioned, state of awareness), whereas willing change through methods like self-hypnosis are manipulations of the "control (programming) center" of experience, which may lead to further delusions/ suffering without the use of proper knowledge, but has the potential to significantly improve the quality of experience. I see consciousness as a spectrum between the poles of strong personal will (ego) and strong psychological freedom (freedom from control/ non-ego). On the strong will side, we experience the most power (effortlessness) to change our behaviors and alter our perceptions, but we're also most out of tune with what is really good for our being at this level due to the majority of our focus being glued to controlling things. This means that we can, and often do, unwittingly cause changes to our lives that result in more hardships than before, even when we're convinced that it will lead us to much happier, wholesome lives. On the side of strong psychological freedom, we lose all sense of freewill and desire to control, but we're entirely enveloped with an intimate understanding of ourselves (self-knowledge) and what is right for us in the moment (highly in tune with our psychology and physiology), as our attention is freed from striving for something "else" or "elsewhere" and this freed up energy now has access to layers upon layers of insight and intuition that were previously suppressed/ repressed. Furthermore, I see the former (ego approach) as an attempt at reinventing the "psychological wheel" and the latter (freedom from ego) as trusting tens of millions of years of fine-tuning self-knowledge and developing clarity on the truly meaningful aspects of life. The latter is probably the more wholesome experience, but the former likely leads to more technological progress. It appears that from entropy comes "release" (peace), which makes sense, if you really think about it. It's stressful to try to keep things in order. My next question would be: what is death, really? That's a topic for another time ;)

>Music Can Increase Concentration I've definitely learned that, this last half year. There's many distractions (noises) in the office, so having some instrumental music to drown this out really helps keep your concentration.

I agree too. Sometimes when I need to do that I just play from the playlist. Other times, I go youtube to search for "music for concentration" if I am in the mood for something different.
