What Would A World With Two Intelligent Species Look Like?

Planet Earth is teeming with life as it houses countless species of plants and animals. Some say there are millions of species, some say billions. Let’s just agree that it’s a lot and move on. 

All these species have gone through and are going through the evolutionary process where they become better versions of themselves to be able to survive better. In a way, the biosphere is like a large video game and nature is the player!

We humans went through the same process and evolved from apes over hundreds of thousands of years to become the only intelligent beings on the planet and to climb to the top of the food chain. 

Our intelligence has equipped us with the ability to influence all other species of the world and we have sort of become the masters of the biosphere (though nature can still do away with us with little effort). But what if there was a second intelligent species who evolved along with us throughout the history? What would such a world look like? Let’s consider the possible scenarios. 

# A Fight To The Death

If there’s one thing our history has showed us, it is that we fight a lot. Countless battles and wars have been fought for a number of reasons but it all comes down to this: there are limited resources on the planet. 

Therefore, it is not surprising to think that if there were two intelligent species on the planet, evolving side by side, they would be in constant conflict for ages. 

As each species would get more advanced, it would need more resources to get even more advanced and since there is only so much to go around, it is highly likely that one of the two species would get killed off. 

So, in such a scenario, ultimately there wouldn’t be two intelligent species on Earth after all! 

# A Collaborative Existence

Although such a scenario is highly unlikely and too complicated in my opinion, there is no doubt that it would be the best option for each species’ survival and development. 

Just like we humans belonging to different religions, cultures and countries are collaborating today, the two intelligent species could do the same and work side by side utilising the collective intelligence to achieve wonders. 

If you’re having trouble imagining it, try picturing a Star Wars type scenario where different intelligent species collaborate for the betterment of all, but on a single planet. 

And with time, they could get so advanced that they could colonise other planets and peacefully separate and settle into different planets, if they so wished but still working together peacefully. 

# A Great Divide

There is a third scenario that is possible such that they neither kill each other off nor collaborate. Such a scenario would be possible when each species is sure of the fact that none can overpower the other and collaboration is out of the question, just like some countries are behaving today. 

In such a case, they would simply divide the Earth into two halves, either east, west or north, south. Each would have to be content to their own hemispheres and there would probably be a giant fence(?) literally dividing the Earth into two. 

For global issues, like for example a threat to the entire planet, the two species would have to work together but for all other purposes, they would be isolated, like a divorced couple who only talk in matters regarding their child.

_This is all very cool to think about and all but something we might actually face in the coming decades. No there is no other intelligent species plotting against us right now. Yet. But soon, when AI becomes as intelligent as humans, we will be facing a similar situation. Be prepared, fellow humans!_

I think collaboration is far more likely in a global society with direct access to governance, supported by decentralised systems.  There are better solutions to limited resources than war.  So humans are one species....I would feel more affinity for individuals of a different species that shared a common ethos with me, than I do for the psychopaths of our species.  The only tribe I want in on is the one that does no aggression to others and that tribe can encompass any composition of species and culture.

Yes, that is the most ideal scenario and indeed with technological innovations even with limited resources, both the species can survive together. But before getting to that point, a competition over the resources is likely and one can see why there would arise conflicts and wars. In fact, the more correct answer is that the two intelligent species don't know about each other.

There are many intelligent species on this planet.
And "scientists" think we are alone, on this planet and in this galaxy.   That we evolved completely out of happenstance.
There is so much evidence that even the assumptions those are based on are false.  But, "scientists" keep trying to shove it down our throat.

The biggest problem with the above hypotheses is that it doesn't take into consideration that the planet is alive.  And the balances of life that are in effect.

Well, I think if there are more than 1 intelligent species on any planet, they would be aware of each other. The effects of any of their technological advances would certainly be non-tangible.

Technology?
Humans could have created "computers" in more than one way.
We decided to make an external representation in machine form.
It works just as well to meditate on allowing your brain to give digital outputs instead of analog ones.

There is more than one intelligent species on this planet.  We will learn this as soon as we stop trying to subvert all technology to war.

However, there was a time long ago when there was several species (about 12) of upright hominids vying for who would be the dominant species on the planet.  And some of that was determined through bloody battle.  Some of it was determined through cross breeding.  The other species are now just myths and legends.

In order to populate a planet on a successful level there are 5 categories by which we can evaluate this process. Human still have to go beyond the first or second level, if I remember well. Adding up more factors to that would lower our potential of survival a great deal, if we weren't to choose the path of collaborative existence.

Division could never happen because of the evolution. You said “like some of the countries in our world”, but they are actually in constant war (it just looks differently than it used to). If they could terminate the other one while being sure they will survive they would do it. The problem is that they will always try to strengthen their position and once the civilization has enough “power” to destroy the other one it would happen. So basically its option 1 but in a really slow process. Also if you are really interested in this subject I recommend you to read City by Clifford D. Simak. It´s short and full of awesomeness.

Evolution of any kind is not true..everything what is mentioned is faith & belief. There is no fact that humans are evolved from apes, which is just an assumption. Darwin theory is not approved and it is just fake. And AI still in its early stage.... iphone's virtual assistant SIRI does not know whether Steve Jobs is dead or alive? It is going to take a very long  time to compare AI with human intelligence.

A.I does not yet have any intelligence at all in human terms. It is intelligence only in the sense that it's capable of problem solving, when given the task by humans. There is no consciousness, and therefore no agenda. There is no reason to believe that consciousness can be created. It's a popular meme these days, but it's just a result of dogmatic reductionism, functionalism to  be precise. This is metaphysics, not science. I don't think we will ever see conscious A.I , and in that case,its problem solving ability would only qualify as intelligence in a very narrow sense of the word.

Yes, it is not yet that developed. But in the coming decades, it will definitely surpass human intelligence. AI is already doing stuff without any human input whatsoever. Just read about some of those things on the internet. Also, a conscious AI can be created with the help of neural networks which process information the same as human brains and I believe that will happen once quantum computing becomes viable.

Why would this definitely happen? You present no argument, so i see that as an unfounded belief. Neural networks doesn't change the fact that we have no clue what consciousness is, let alone any reason to think that it can be created. I think it's principally impossible. So far all evidence seems to confirm that. Remember that consciousness is not about the sophistication of algorithms but about the ability to have experiences. An entity is conscious if the question"what is it like to be.." can be answered. What's it like to be a dog? We can only guess, but we assume it's like something. What it's like to be myself is the most intimate and direct knowledge i have. What's it like to be an A.I? It's like absolutely nothing,it seems, as there have been no signs of consciousness. You need to understand what the assumptions actually are in physicalism, and functionalism, and then state those, and claim that they are correct. Then you can make your assumptions, and they can be criticized. Now the assumptions are implicit and unexamined.

You are not really making an argument that reacts to what I said. The idea that we can create consciousness is not very unique or original, it simply follows trends n the science community, which are spread by popular science. The trends are related to reductionism, and an obsession with neurocience as an explanatory model for all human activity, and human experiences. Research is quoted in popular science magazines,results are interpreted by science journalists with a limited understanding, and results are reduced to silly headlines like "scientists have now found the jealousy gene" or some such nonsense. The belief in strong A.I directly follows this trend, and it's popularised by Ray kurzweil and his followers. It's  based on dogma, and a lack of understanding of the logical premises behind their belief.

Yeah, in every generation there are people who say a certain thing will happen and there are people who say those things won't happen. Time and again history has shown us that not only do those things happen but many things happen that were beyond the imagination of people of that time.

Just look at the world we live in today. No person in 1500 AD could have even imagined the world that we live in today. Who knows what the next 100 years or even 500 years will bring to us. We can't even imagine them today.

I totally agree with the fact that when a superior being shows up, you either join them or get killed off. When AI arrives we will be faced with similar situation. I think that's why Elon Musk has been promoting the neural lace so much. Neural lace technology along with other bio-enhancements will certainly enable us to "join" the AI. 

I think that's the only way we can ensure our survival. Nice insights! :)

Hi buddy. nice idea for a post but I'd like to challenge a couple of the points you have made. You mentioned that all of the species on earth were going through the evolutionary process but this is still a theoretical concept and has no hard evidence to prove it. I also believe I am correct in saying that there is no evidence for positive mutations, only negative ones which would instead lead to these species becoming the worst versions of themselves. Also, you mentioned the constant wars being fought over the span of human history and whilst hundreds or thousands of years ago this may have been the case, I don't know, I would suggest that certainly in the last couple of centuries, these wars have been fought by ruthless men and women at the pinnacle of society, the kings and queens and presidents and prime ministers who claim to be the representation of the wishes of the people but are instead the puppets of elite banking and corporate interests. If the normal man or woman in the street were left to their own devices without the interference of government and those who claim authority, it is my opinion that peace would break out before long.......and be long overdue!
