I have always been reluctant to support humanity's curiosity regarding space travel and the colonising of other planets. This has probably been based on fear rather than rational thought. Your argument has made me question my poorly-thoughout original views. However I think that it is vital for humans to think wisely about our societal structures, since applying them to another planet of 'second chance' is only going to be followed by the same global issues which we face today. I sincerely hope that these can be shifted in the future, but until then, I do not think that it would be just to replicate what I consider to be a critical situation. If we were to use a second planet for resources, I think that it cannot come from a place of competition, like it has so often been the case in the past (e.g. the scramble for Africa). I'm somewhat sceptical about whether we are able to achieve this.

What if other species colonise us first? :-)

I am all for space exploration and find it awe inspiring 

But I think we cant colonize other planets, we can although atleast in the near future only set-up laboratories and send humans to do science up there. Ofcource Mr.Bezos would want to mine diamonds on Uranus. 

What I really want to see happen is how they will avoid the Kessler Syndrome

Earth is a place for all with so many beautiful places endorsed by nature. So i don't think there would be any reason to leave earth

There is too many "ifs" in settling in another planet. What if human biology doesn't endure the life in that planet. What if that worldlike planet had some kind of harmful bacteria that wipe humanity in no time. What if the plants produce toxic fruits. That list goes bigger. 

My point is, a fresh start may seems like a wonderful idea. But we don't have enough information about space and the other planets. On the other hand, humankind is a badass intruder whom likes to vitiate. We have to change it first.

We also need to start populating our government with humans too.

Perhaps we should cleanup all the garbage we created here on Earth before we spread our garbage and disease of impurities to other planets. That would be being responsible.   I am sure this is not the popular comment and may not get any upvotes from it but It is how I feel.  I am all for exploring planets as I am a Si Fi fan, but when you are sick you do not go out and expose others to your germs and illness. And Earth in so many ways is very  sick. Lets get healthier FIRST before we duplicate and colonize.   Thanks.

Your point about the dangers of having all of our eggs in one basket is a good one.  But why would we even WANT baskets?  Why not decentralize, distribute widely and acquire massive redundancy?

You also mentions _asteroids that almost hit earth frequently_....

We've been to the moon using 1950's technology.  Today the tech is a little bit more advanced.  Is it a stretch to think that we could catch a passing asteroid, hollow it out, put a spin on it (for gravity) insert an eco-system and live inside?

Kind of a like a cruise ship in space?

Why put our eggs on yet another planet..or two...

Why not have an armada of habitats?

Although I see the point of the "all eggs in one basket" argument, it is not the most important one to me.

Peering back at our history, it is obvious that our ancestors could have used the same "logic"to choose not to progress and explore. Why spend so much money and resources on large fleets of ships to then risk lives entering the dangerous oceans when we have enough problems at home? Why cross the rapid river when we're already safe and comfortable on the other side? Why leave the cave when it is all nice and comy inside?

You choose whatever point you like and the answer will always be the same: We would have missed out on the discoveries that taught us how to better master the world in which we live. Why should it be different today?

If we stopped destroying the planet, and put vast resources into good use instead of wars, greed, etc we will be just fine on Earth. But innovation should continue, if there is a beneficial way of starting a colony on Mars without further damage, that should be pursued at least for sake of science.

Governments, Science always works on a multidimensional front. Otherwise we would wait forever to solve our poverty problem and never venture out in search for anything.

No we do not need to colonize other planets! The whole world population can fit into Canada and still have room left. If we embrace regenerative ecosystems than there will be no deserts. You can turn every desert into a paradise with Permaculture. Don't be silly

It's actually a very interesting topic, which I think might be reality sooner than we think! My boyfriend often asks me if I would move to a different planet with him if we got the opportunity. I still haven't found my answer, but I do see that there would be a point in doing it. It would, however, be the biggest and craziest decision of my life!

Well its a good feeling when a person is surrounded by endless problems and he decides to have a break and grabs a telescope and points towards the night sky and sees thousands of stars well that moment is the best. Well to find planets that are in the habitable zone is easier than getting to it .So lets hope for the best .

I am so glad you made this post! I get so frustrated with people that say expanding into space is a waste of resources and time yet are quite happy to complain about overpopulation and the abuse mankind has on nature. 

The overpopulation argument is what bores me the most because when you ask such people when they want to die they can't answer other than to say they hope they live a normal human lifespan but we all know, if you were to ask them the same question when they are old and frail they still won't be able to comfortably say they are ok about dying. 

The way I see it, we humans are incredibly lucky to have envolved the way we have to have this advanced neo-cortex that has allowed us to do things no other animal can do (go to space). 

I don't believe having an advanced neo-cortex means we have to still rely on evolution to get us to the next level. As the only advanced species, we know of,  we have a duty to transcend our limitations and to thrive beyond Earth and Sol. 

It will require a lot of people to make it happen and once we move beyond Earth, the overpopulation excuse will have no legitimacy. 

It is natural for us to overcome problems by transcending our limitations. If too many people cause too many wars, we should just delete whatever it is in our make up that causes sociopathy. If we have too many "mouths to feed" we should harness ribosomes and other genetic technology to create food without livestock. 

If we can't find a balance between the left and right we should just leapfrog both and press on with UBI and automation. 

We are not just human's we are the worlds best problem solvers and colonizing space is a challenge we must meet or there simply isn't a point in this civilization or anything special about us compared to all the other animals that are not blessed with an advanced neo-cortex.

Is the recent spate of news guests from the traditional financial establishment that is all desperately trying to put people off crypto, a sign that the capitalist system is about to eat itself in the face of inevitable change?

For a lifetime they have known nothing but control over money and crypto is the something most of them don't understand as they even admit in these tv debates.

They are never going to like the idea of something they don't have much control over let alone understand.

Surely this fear or resistance to change is the same as their reasons for their negativity towards arguably inevitable ideas like UBI? crypto isn't going away, it's only going to become more popular, especially with millennials.

Most of us live under a capitalist system and that world capitalism has become invincible from critique like how religion used to be.

It clearly only works for those that already have capital so if any form of sabotage of crypto happens, surely it will just move to areas where people have no stake in the capitalism game?

The pull between left and right is all I hear about in terms of politics, both extremes have been tried all over the world and the tug between them just seems to lead to wars and corruption.

I feel like the routine is reaching the end of its shelf life and things like crypto or future UBI programs are going to play a big part of the handover.

I'd say good luck landing on something that isn't even solid. But that wouldn't even be possible since we can't get out of this enclosed system we call Earth.

We should explore space but at the same time i am a believer that we donot understand some science behind universe.The laws probably are different which once solved will provide a means to travel may be faster than light? May be time travel possible?
