Gigantic astrophysical disks work in accordance to the Schrödinger equation
***Quantum equations are already at home in the world of tiny particles. But it seems that sometimes they seep into the macro-world. An astrophysicist has found that the Schrödinger equation describes the evolution of some gigantic structures in space.***

Many of you will know that our current understanding of our universe is divided between quantum mechanics and general relativity. Quantum mechanics deals with the microverse and its many many particles. General relativity rules over the macroverse, from molecules (though we have seen quantum effects at decently large scales) up to gigantic distances between stars and galaxies. And usually, they both like to stick with doing their own things. But that has now changed. Konstantin Batygin from Caltech has during his research found that the quantum Schrödinger equation can very nicely describe the long-term evolution of some astronomical objects.

Massive astronomical objects are usually surrounded by lots of material. This material orbits them just like planets orbit stars. For example, supermassive black holes are usually surrounded by a number of stars, dust, and other stuff. Because of the gravitational forces, a flat disk forms and such disk can be the size of a solar system or larger. Such disks rarely keep their simple circular shape. Over millions of years, they evolve and things like ripples and similar things appear on them, similar to how we see waves on top of a pond. The creation and evolution of these ripples have been causing a lot of headache to astrophysicists as the processes behind them are to complex for detailed computer modeling.

Batygin has attempted to simplify the situation by using the perturbation theory. A similar approach is used to calculate the evolution of planetary orbits over millions of years. But when Batygin used the approach to the disk the Schrödingers equation appeared in his calculations. To explain, Schrödingers equation is used in quantum theory to describe changes over time in a physical system. It describes the space-time evolution of a particle wave function moving in field forces. Batygin found himself in the shocking situation where a quantum equation had an effect on a scale of a few light years.
