Manito Park
A week ago, while I was house-sitting and dog-sitting for my daughter, I ventured to the nearby city of Spokane, Washington, to explore Manito Park. I have been to this park many times over the years, and never tire of it. The beauty of the place always impresses and amazes me.

![20181001_141531_2.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbNJFgVuXEM7ZVSXhM94JZkQRVZcgWZRTY9CncYGUjpqP/20181001_141531_2.jpg)

"Duncan Garden is a classical European Renaissance-style garden comprising three acres of the park. The garden includes manicured turf areas and vast displays of colorful annual bedding plants." [source](https://my.spokanecity.org/parks/gardens/duncan/) Every year the color combinations and varieties of flowers are a little different, so it's a new sight each summer.

![20181001_141635_3.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmTzMiypTQaXvdhRwz3tiq2pTv2pjChiFUCk8xCnuNchZq/20181001_141635_3.jpg)

This is such an attention-getting splash of color!

![20181001_141758_4.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmNvVtFKCY8qn3qqEAQtbJb6pTaV13VzebUBiE1bNnG8KB/20181001_141758_4.jpg)

Across the parking lot from Duncan Garden, a little path leads up a small slope to this shelter.

![20181001_145509 trimmed_12.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVkUUAfXWMEXxdvXt2uezM6TBJu9jGiotDRMaLGHck9Tt/20181001_145509%20trimmed_12.jpg)

On the other side of that little slope, what a sight meets the eye! It is the wall below the rose garden. This, too, is planted with different flowers from one year to the next.

![20181001_141947_5.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbcNKgVXZMMhKdNgQnCwXWRHczgyhaxJ817Fa7N2Np7Ur/20181001_141947_5.jpg)

This vine-covered wall conceals a stairway up to the rose garden. I had never before been here at the right time of year to see its autumn colors.

![20181001_142236_6.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmS7s4xP6GAicZyXWBw3hCvedWAhwVhWN1WNhMdH2AWDg3/20181001_142236_6.jpg)

I was surprised to see so many roses still blooming bravely on the first day of October. But I've never tried to grow roses, so I really wouldn't know!

![20181001_142352_8.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmef4jaCKWoFx2rMBVFPwFV4CD8XCENheK2iYgQA3gF3JH/20181001_142352_8.jpg)

Do you ever sniff a rose in a public garden and then wonder how many other noses have already touched it that day?

![20181001_143201 trimmed_1.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbQ71bjgn9iHGDK3SLx6BkuBsGKwB94kYDQn4awpqLwMw/20181001_143201%20trimmed_1.jpg)

Not only is it fun to take photos here, but it is also a favorite spot for artists. This lady was having fun with the autumn colors, but lamented the quickly changing light conditions. The sun was playing hide and seek behind the clouds.

The Japanese Garden symbolizes the friendship of Spokane and its sister city, Nishinomiya, Japan. The garden is designed for quiet contemplation and a leisurely stroll. Signs caution against running or making noise. Huge goldfish (koi?) occupy the peaceful pond.

Tsutakwa Pagoda was a gift to Spokane from its sister city in 1989.

The perennial garden looks different every month, of course. I like getting ideas for plants to try out in my own garden. And that is the end of your mini-tour of Manito Park!

It has been years since I last visited Manito park. I have fond memories of the Japanese Garden and its koi pond though.

Koi and goldfish are related. They are both essentially ornamental carp subspecies.

@scribblingramma I totally laughed at this line:
>Do you ever sniff a rose in a public garden and then wonder how many other noses have already touched it that day?

Nope I have never wondered that, but my nose is one of them because I always sniff all these lovely flowers <3
