The Magic of Maxims
<html>
<p>Over the last several years I’ve become far better at navigating life than I once was. &nbsp;Whereas life and people once presented as chaotic and uncertain, I now (usually) see clear patterns and discernible currents. &nbsp;This clear seeing has helped me and those I love by improving my decision making immensely.</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>I began to see clearly when I finally settled upon (and began consistently applying) a few Life Maxims (sometimes also called “heuristics” or mental shortcuts or what some might call “folk wisdom”). &nbsp;At first I did so mostly unconsciously and as a coping mechanism to deal with the chaos. &nbsp;But as I experienced success doing so, I became increasingly aware of the “rules” that I was unconsciously applying to make sense of things. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>These rules or Maxims are not infallible, but I find that they work around 70 to 80 percent of the time. &nbsp;And importantly, when they are wrong they are wrong in ways that don’t cause much harm. &nbsp;By contrast when they are right they have massive benefits and/or prevent severe harm. &nbsp;</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>So, in hopes that my experience with these Maxims might benefit others, I’ve decided to publish a series posts describing them and how I apply them. This is the first in that series. &nbsp;But before introducing the first one, let me say up front that I’m not responsible for hardly any of them. &nbsp;“Everything I’ve learned, I learned from someone else.” &nbsp;When I can, I will try to give credit where credit is due. &nbsp;</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>With that background (and with credit to Nassim Taleb, author of The Black Swan), here’s my First (and maybe most important) Life Maxim (and I probably say it to myself or to others at least several times a day): &nbsp;</p>
<p><br></p>
<p><strong>Never risk a lot for a little!</strong></p>
<p><br></p>
<p>It’s just that simple. &nbsp;If we would universally follow this Maxim, we’d experience much more joy and much less angst. &nbsp;But instead, due to cognitive biases and other reasons, we usually violate this rule far more than we honor it. &nbsp;Common examples of violating it include:</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>1. &nbsp;Not wearing a seat belt because we can’t be bothered to take an extra second to click it, thereby risking a lot (our lives or our health) for a little (an extra second of effort)</p>
<p>2. Texting while driving (my 2018 resolution is to stop doing this completely!)</p>
<p>3. Using the same simple password on multiple websites (thereby exposing ourselves to identity theft, etc.) because we can’t be bothered to take the few extra minutes to set up a password manager (which actually SAVES TIME in the mid and long term)</p>
<p>4. Not maintaining our cars (e.g., not rotating tires, changing the oil, etc.) or our homes (not changing HVAC air filters, not fixing a leak) in order to save a few dollars or a few hours.</p>
<p>5. Not exercising regularly.</p>
<p>6. Incurring massive debts to attend out-of-state universities when suitable in-state alternatives exist</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>I could go on and on and on. &nbsp;</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>As you go about your day today, be alert to instances where you or others habitually risk a lot for a little. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You’ll be amazed at how often it happens—from individuals to companies to nation states. &nbsp;&nbsp;Stop the insanity!</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>But remember that what constitutes “a lot” or “a little” is largely subjective. &nbsp;It will vary from person to person, which leads me to my Second Life Maxim:</p>
<p><br></p>
<p><strong>Whether something is “a lot” or “a little” depends not upon its absolute value but upon its marginal utility to the decision maker. &nbsp;</strong></p>
<p><br></p>
<p>By “marginal utility” I mean how much a thing will impact one’s present or future happiness or well-being. &nbsp;</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>For instance, for one person $10,000 may mean very little, either because she doesn’t value money or because she has so much that this $10,000 makes no difference in her life (in other words, it has low or zero marginal utility). &nbsp;Such a person may regularly risk or spend money in ways that you or I would judge to be irrational or irresponsible. &nbsp;But she isn’t necessarily violating Second Life Maxim by doing so. &nbsp;She’d only violate the Maxim if SHE valued this money highly and yet STILL risked it on foolish things. &nbsp;</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>The Life Maxims so far:</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>1. &nbsp;Never risk a lot for a little.</p>
<p>2. Whether something is a lot or a little isn’t measured in absolute terms but rather by its marginal utility—its impact on your present and future happiness and well-being.&nbsp;</p>

True, little or more is depends upon the user or consumer of particular thing, there is no value of money or gold for particular person who don't want it or he is not giving value to it. Everything is depends upon your thinking or what value you are giving for monetary and other things, and all utilities are different from person to person, but we have to remember that if you have more than marginal utility, it's better to share with those who don't have basic resources or for them for whom everything is scarce. I really like the points which you have learned, means sometime we avoid really important things due to laziness, but it can lead to some bad circumstances in future, so always remember to take all safety measures. Looking forward to the rest of these. I thought I had everything figured out in my mid 20s. Now in my late 30s, I realize how much intellectual and philosophical growth I still have ahead of me, and it's really enjoyable to embrace this growth.

Interesting article. Just came across you through a @knircky resteem.
It's good to have some life maxim, to be honest  I have never determined mine, nor did I actually decided where or what I want to be.

And I have to admit I'm guilty of number 5. I should know better but I always excuse myself not having enough time.

Of course we should risk something to improve ourselves but you are right, if the only gain is some temporally thrill or fun it might not be worth taken the risk at all. I guess that is something we learn to understand when we grow older

The human mind is paradoxical. We constantly hear such maxims, but to hear and do are completely different things in real life. We often justify ourselves by the fact that we will take it into practice later when we reach some kind of harmony in the flow of life, when we will have time to focus on the little things. However, only these little things can bring harmony, step by step used in life. Thank you for reminding people of the simple truths they forget.

Your series about life maxims is off to a great start. Never put it in words, but in a way your "Never risk a lot for a little" has given me some guidance later in my life too.

Had to learn it the hard way. We have this saying: "if the donkey is too well he goes dancing on ice". I think the English equivalent is "complacency makes  you reckless"... and I have risked a lot, just about everything, for little or nothing really. So, eventually I too got it ;-)

And yes, please.. everyone stop texting while driving. The past couple of years I had several close encounters with cars who's drivers were paying more attention to their phone than traffic... street can get very narrow, even for a motorcycle ;-/

I also think, there are a few things that can't be measured, like our health or a good relationship. They really are not worth any risk at all :-)

Very creative post.  It's actually gotten my mind churning a bit especially on number 1.  I suppose I've always been a lil' bit of a risk taker or like most don't consider death in my life related to me just yet.  This is good.
