On the surface my life has been completely uneventful these past two or three weeks but I can feel very clearly that I am riding a wave right now. 


The wave of focusing on what I can do and ignoring what I have no control over. I’ve been pulled to chime on on this conflict in the Middle East and I know I shouldn’t so I don’t. I care!  For sure, I care, but this is not within my sphere of influence and when news just breaks, peoppe are less receptive to reason. 

What’s in my control?  

Well I have a certain amount of time each day and I don’t wake up present and appreciative and primed to make good shit happen, so that is the first thing I work on after (or preferably before) taking care of any responsibilities. 

Once I am primed to make good shit happen, I can do anything I want and it’ll have a more positive effect than if I hadn’t primed myself. 

For real though, I can approach anything in my life any way I feel like it and the results will be better. Even when they are not, they lead me to discoveries about how I could do things better. 

That means if I want to talk to students about a taboo topic, I can, because I am in a state where I am also sensitive to their needs and desires. I am relaxed so I am less likely to be awkward or focus too much on fear based urges. I am less interested in what I can get and more interested in what I can give.  From this state, as long as I respect peoples boundaries and autonomy, I can do no wrong. 

So I let go of all my worries.  If there is a problem that requires my attention I will face it proactively. If not, I can just follow where my inspiration leads me. 

These days a lot of my inspiration has led me back to this community, specifically the newly rebranded INLEO, which now is open to all topics, not only finance.  I have been excited about how monetized short form content will change things. 

I found that it allows me to share ideas and be creative even when I don’t have a lot of time, and that I appreciate every penny a lot more because I was doing exactly this on Twitter and earning nothing. 

I also see they are trying to keep old content monetized through their ad model, you receive a tiny bit of Leo for each view on your post.  This solves the problem that I had been trying to solve with the Deadpost initiative back in the day.  It also encourages people to share their work with their friends outside hive which I see as a much more effective way to onboard than just telling people about Hive.

Between having an outlet for short form or “lazier” content and this potential to monetize old posts, I believe it will also lead to an increased quality of long form content. 

In any case I powered up another 15k Leo today. 

I also see @go-kyo trying to revive the Japanese community too with the @hive-ja account (delegations appreciated!). I am not sure if my efforts will be effective but I am excited to brainstorm and experiment with how to potentially grow the Japanese community here.  It’s got me posting in Japanese again which is good practice. 

That whole process also lead me to revive an old post about my unlikely deep dive into Ghana’s indie hip hop scene that I want to write for people on Twitter just as much as friends on Hive. 

On another front I have become much more open in the advertising of my work. Rather than fear the leakage of my “trade secrets” I rest assured knowing that I have something completely original and useful to offer.  I will not try to hide as much and I feel much more confident that it will not hurt my ability to earn a living, and that if anyone steals my ideas, they won't be able to do it as well as I do.  Perhaps they can copy parts of what I do, but no one will be able to replace me, I offer something completely original.

In that way, my teaching work is going to start overlapping a lot more with my music and writing and community building.

I'm making more of an effort to focus on the people I appreciate, and to work toward making a relationship with them even before they make an effort.  I have no problem being the first to show interest.  These days I visit friends at work during their lunch break or meet up to talk about these things much more often then I had before.

I am feeling positive basically every day, and I am totally focused on what I can do, rather than what I want other people to do.

Obviously this hasn’t always been easy.  It’s a muscle I am still working on, but if I can do it, so can anyone.

I imagine a lot of good things will start to sprout from the work I am putting in now.  I feel the fruits of my labor are only a few months away from blooming and that things will go much more smoothly for me from here on out.  I still have no idea what it looks like but I keep building.
