It's becoming clear to me that I would feel much more at home if I had some Hive friends in my immediate vicinity.  I've been part of this community since 2017 and at that time, it was just a hobby and a way to learn more and make some online friends.  

As the world as changed a whole lot since then, I feel more and more that we at Hive have a shared vision for which direction society is going.  It doesn't mean we always agree on how to do things, or lean in the same political directions or have the same beliefs, but we have a kind of shared trajectory, and a shared culture.  

I've always felt most comfortable having multiple groups, of which I relate based on certain things, and not trying to define myself by the group.  I just treat the group as a means of connecting with people with fewer hurdles.  

Pop culture has a dominant narrative, and when you find smaller subcultures, it's easier to speak outside of that dominant narrative.  But subcultures themselves can start to dictate the narratives of the individual when they become too attached to them.

For that reason, I like to float between a few different groups.

These days, since Hive is not only a hobby, but also a place where I'm building a future for myself, I want it to be more than just a side gig, a secret life or escape from my physical life.  I want some friends who are into Hive who I can meet in person regularly.

I was sitting in a bar with some old friends last week and when they asked me what I was busy with, I literally did not have the means to communicate it to them.

"I'm trying to turn this community and curation group that I organized into more of a place to chill and meet people and make friends."

"Curation group?"

"I've been working on building a bridge between twitter and Hive and my work in order to make my work and play overlap so that I can get paid for doing what I love"

Now if they were actually interested, I'd be glad to explain all that, but I've tried before and this is all way too out of their comfort zone.  They are Djs and guitarists who like to drink and chill in music bars, watch concerts and hate thinking about money or gaining attention through social media.  I love them, but they don't really get intrigued when I talk about investments and blockchain technology, and definitely not when I talk about social media.  They want to talk about music and cool live houses, mountains we can visit nearby and complain about politics.

That's all good, but there's a big problem for me. None of this stuff relates to any of my current or near-future goals, and so it all kind of feels like a waste of time to me.  I want to spend more time with people who have common goals and who I can work on stuff with.  

It's not that I don't think these people could eventually understand and get involved, but I would have to spend way more time just pal-ing around with them to get them interested, and I'm just not interested in pal-ing around, it's too time consuming.  I can connect easily and get interested in other peoples passions rather quickly, I don't want to take weeks and months of meeting each other multiple times a week to build up trust and interest.  I don't require nearly that much time.

And so I wonder if I could find some friends who would be interested in Hive and all that and get involved more easily.  That way maybe I could bring them to these spaces and meet these musician friends and maybe it would be easier to build that bridge.

I don't want to abandon these people as friends, but it's clear that our lifestyles aren't the same.  I don't drink every day, I don't stay up all night talking, I no longer have interest in complaining about politics.  I don't feel that we need to have the same hobbies and interests to be friends, but I'm more interested in helping each other plan out or goals and building things together.  That's the kind of relationship I want to have.

I feel that it's much easier to find people like that at Hive than anywhere else right now.  It's just part of the culture of BUIDLing.  It's even a better match than the crypto community at large which is more focused on just making money or on tech. Hive actually has content creators and community creators.

I want some of that in my daily life!

I just discovered from reading a post by @kommienezuspadt that Minneapolis has quite a Hive scene with lots of friends and even a cafe that is connected to Hive.  I have to say I'm incredibly jealous and want to find something like that here in Tokyo, or to build it myself.

I feel that my activity on twitter will make it possible, but it's still a ways to go.  Most Japanese people are really hesitant to meet during the whole pandemic, despite the fact that shops are open.  I'm thinking about organizing a meetup in the park though.  Let's see what I can manage.
