<p>This is a post about making art and the struggles, rewards, and <em>fear </em>that often accompany this practice.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Who are we? For the most part, I'm sure we are ordinary people trying to create something that's at least a little bit better than ordinary.</p>
<p>Before I dig into the meat of this post, I want to give a big shout-out to authors (and artists) David Bayles and Ted Orland who wrote the book <em>Art &amp; Fear: Observations On The Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking</em>.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The book was a great inspiration for this post. I'll admit, many of my points are lifted right out of the text.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Every artist that is struggling to create should read this book. There. That's it for my plug, on with the content!</p>
<h1>Are You Afraid to Create Art?</h1>
<p>I know I am. I can't speak for every artist, so I'll share some of my own feelings and experiences: <em><strong>What am I afraid of?</strong></em></p>
<p><em>I'm afraid</em> that I'm no good.<br>
<em>I'm afraid</em> that the art I create will be no good.<br>
<em>I'm afraid</em> that I have nothing worth saying.<br>
<em>I'm afraid</em> that I'll pour hours, days, weeks, and months into a piece and in the end, no one will care.<br>
<em>I'm afraid </em>that someone will make fun of my work.<br>
<em>I'm afraid </em>that I'll disappoint those who expect greatness from me.<br>
<em>I'm afraid</em> that I'll disappoint myself.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Do these fears resonate with any of you?</p>
<p>I can't tell you how many times I've come up with ideas but never ended up putting those ideas to paper. Nor can I say how many times I've started a piece only to abandon it soon after.&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Making art is difficult.&nbsp;</strong>It requires deep self reflection and emotional turmoil, not to mention the physical labour of putting pen to paper...or brush to canvas... or camera to scene. Whatever your practice, <em>it is a labour</em>.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The knowledge that making art will be labourious is a roadbloack in and of itself, but that roadblock is amplified when combined with that fear that all the work may not even be worth it.</p>
<p>Here are a few things to remember that will hopefully help you overcome your fear and push you to create:&nbsp;</p>
<h1>You Are Not Mozart</h1>

<p>Actually, what do I know? Maybe you are a prodigy. Maybe you are creating a masterpiece that will put the rest of us to shame. If that's the case, you may feel free to ignore this section. I'm writing for the rest of us. Most of are not prodigies or geniuses. We are ordinary people. True geniuses are one-in-a-million, but good, even <em>great</em> art is made all the time.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Art is far more than just natural talent. I'm <a href="https://steemit.com/life/@sethlinson/innocent-comments-that-demean-the-achievements-of-others"><strong>written before</strong></a> about how the prevailing view of art and artmaking is that it's source is found in innate talent. It's almost as if people believe that you have no say in whether or not you can create greatness. You're either have the magic in you, or you don't.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Every artist knows that this is, of course, not true. Great art is not limited to those society deems geniuses. Skills can be learned. Talent, much like luck, mistakes, and tragedies have do have a role to play in art, but these are not dependable tools to an artist.&nbsp;</p>
<p>We may <em>know </em>this truth deep down, but it can still be difficult to get over the knowledge that <strong>we are not Mozart. </strong>Knowing that you are not a genius prodigy when that's what the world expects from artists can be discouraging.</p>
<h3>What can we do to overcome this mental roadblock?&nbsp;</h3>
<ul>
  <li>Be honest with yourself about who you are and what natural abilities you are endowed with. Don't stew in the knowledge that you aren't as talented as you would like to be.&nbsp;</li>
  <li>Where there's a lack in your skills, practice to improve. You won't get better by spending time worrying that you aren't good enough.</li>
  <li>Get to work.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>
<h1>You Are Not Perfect</h1>

<p>One of the biggest things that keeps me from putting my pen to paper is the fear that I'll make a mistake. I'm afraid that what I make won't match my vision. All the praise in the world is worthless if I've disappointed myself... if I won't forgive myself for creating something <em>less</em> than what I imagined it to be.&nbsp;</p>
<p>However, I doubt any artist has been able to perfectly replicate the picture in their minds. I doubt any artist has made a piece free of error.</p>
<p>Art is supposed to reflect our humanity, and human nature is imperfect.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What can we do to deal with our own imperfection?</h3>
<ul>
  <li>Embrace it. Perfect art would be cold and lifeless. The imperfections of art are what make it interesting. The mistakes make it human.</li>
  <li>Learn to work with your mistakes. I said above that mistakes are not a reliable tool to create art, but a good artist can use his or her accidents to create something beautiful and so far beyond what they or anybody else could have imagined.</li>
  <li>Get to work.</li>
</ul>
<h1>You Are Not Alone</h1>

<p>Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one with doubts and fears. I see other artists confidently sharing their work on social media. It's all sunshine, roses and success for them.&nbsp;</p>
<p>But the truth about social media is that it's full of liars. Almost everyone presents a dishonest picture of themselves. They photograph and write about all of the best moments and leave out the ugliness.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What can we do when we feel alone in our struggles?</h3>
<ul>
  <li>Don't get discouraged when you see the success of other artists. They've all been where you are and they've all felt how you feel.&nbsp;</li>
  <li>Consider joining a group or club of other artists when you can be open with each other about your fears and struggles. At the very least, try to build up a friendship with another artist so that you can support and encourage each other.</li>
  <li>Get to work.</li>
</ul>
<h1>Concluding Remarks</h1>
<p>The final point in each of these categories is "<strong>get to work</strong>". It's a simple solution, <em>but simple doesn't mean easy</em>. Getting over yourself and your own fears can be the hardest thing ever, but the truth is that it just needs to be done. If you want to be an artist, go make art.&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Keep on making art. Create, create, create. And then create some more.</strong></p>

Fear is a time wasting, really. As long as you don't take comissions or ask for critique noone can tell you that something is wrong. Art is about pleasure, not about fear:)

:) Thanks for sharing this !! I tend to hide my art. Weirdly, I especially hide it when I don't have an audience. Most of the fun in art for me is sharing it. I've not been involved with communities for almost 5 years and I've really been missing them. I'm 99.9% sure Steemit will be a big help.  ...

Let's be honest though. Friends in digital communities are just like friends in "real life" ... they say "that's nice dear" and I'm perfectly willing to be happy even if I suspect they're just saying so ... or not really qualified to evaluate it. !! 

 But when I consider pushing the Internet envelope toward selling my art ... meh ... that's when the chase turns toward a chase for perfection. Because obviously, if it's not perfect, I don't have to give up hiding my art :)

Yea, it's tough having friends or a community who will say nothing more than "that's nice dear." People are scared to be honest, and without real honesty you won't find real encouragement.
