 We prepared the surprise celebration at local Indian Restaurant in Stockholm yesterday. And because one of our guests has a serious nut allergy, we advised the chef that none of our food should contain nuts. But by preparing rice pilaf with cashews, he wrecked the occasion.  As you can imagine, it was a complete disaster. I was angry and frustrated because he ruined not only my party, but also the food for the guests. I still canβt believe how thoughtless he was.  Sensitive health issues are always a concern in restaurants, and those with allergies are always concerned about being served something that will cause an allergic reaction. With Swedish restaurant having strict hygiene and allergy rules in place, this is not the case for most of the Pakistani Indian restaurants in Sweden. # Why is this happening?  There are many reasons why this is happening. One reason is that Pakistani and Indian restaurants in Sweden are not taking allergies seriously enough. They often do not have proper procedures in place to deal with allergies, and they do not train their staff properly on how to handle them. This can lead to dangerous situations for customers with allergies. Another reason is that Indian cook and restaurant staff are generally not very aware of the risks of food allergies. They often think that it is something that only affects children, and that adults can just eat whatever they want without any problems. This is not the case, and there have been several cases of adults suffering from severe reactions after eating at restaurants. We're so grateful that our guest is okay and that we got to know in time before he starts eating. But it was a scary experience for everyone involved. It just goes to show how important it is to be aware of your guests' allergies and to take steps to ensure their safety. ## The legal perspective: Swedish law regards food allergies as a disability. In Sweden, food allergies are considered a disability, and restaurants are required by law to take them into account when preparing meals. However, many Pakistani and Indian restaurants in Sweden do not take allergies seriously, and customers with allergies often have to settle for whatever the restaurant offers. This can be a problem for people with severe allergies, as even trace amounts of the allergen can trigger a reaction. Pakistani and Indian restaurants in Sweden need to take food allergies seriously. Customers with allergies should not have to worry about whether their meal will be safe to eat, and restaurant staff should be trained in how to cater for customers with allergies. ### Whatβs being done about it? In Sweden, Pakistani and Indian restaurants are not taking allergies seriously. This is a problem because many people have severe allergies to things like peanuts, gluten, and dairy. These allergies can be life-threatening, and yet restaurants are not doing anything to accommodate them. There are a few organizations working to change this. The Swedish Association of Restaurants and Hotels (SRA) has an allergy task force that is working to raise awareness about the issue and create guidelines for restaurants. The Swedish Food Federation (Livsmedelsverket) is also working on a project to help educate restaurateurs about allergies and how to best accommodate guests with allergies. Despite these efforts, there is still a long way to go. Many Pakistani and Indian restaurants in Sweden do not take allergies seriously, and as a result, people with severe allergies are at risk every time they eat out. It's not only Indian and Pakistani restaurants who are lacking in this, but plenty of others in Sweden too. That goes for both allergies and food preferences. I've mostly stopped eating out because of this. For example, I've been served beet carpaccio where half the slices were apple, without it being said on the menu. The waiter asked if I couldn't just eat the beets and I'd get a free dessert. Apple pie, no doubt! :P Meatballs with breadcrumbs in them, with no notice that they contain gluten, and apple sauce instead of lingonberry jam. Orange juice that's really a mix of orange, apples, mango, peach etc, again no notice in the menu. Mushroom risotto with pieces of chicken, when it's listed as vegan. One crazy place claimed they served halal beef skewers. Turned out to be minced pork!
