This is a cool solution. We do this for our kids when they are at the library--they have an old iPhone of ours that is set up with their iCloud account. They can use it to call us through Facetime and send text messages. So far so good, and no cost!

Yes Facetime and imessage are great services. The good thing about this service is you can call the number using a regular land line. The number assigned to the iphone through the app is treated as a regular number. It is also available on android and the web I think. Thanks for the comment!
