Exploring the World Beyond the Visible Spectrum

A while back, I converted my old Canon EOS 450D digital camera to be fully sensitive to infrared as well as the visible light spectrum by removing the IR-cut filter that sits in front of the CMOS imaging sensor.

A full spectrum camera can render the world through many interpretations via different filters attached to the lens.

In these photos, I used a 760 nm high pass filter which attenuates any light waves below 760 nanometers in wavelength. Red light is around 700 nm, so 760 nm is already in the realm of infrared.

With the above mentioned combination and a black and white conversion, leaves and foliage reflect a lot of infrared, making them appear white.

As a result of my DIY conversion, the camera no longer autofocuses correctly, due to the absence of an optical filter, but thankfully it has live-view so I can still focus manually.
