Beyond comprehension

Why do children die? Why do good people suffer? Why do bad people seem to prosper? These are just some of the questions that plague a person who is trying to make sense of the world and the lack of "justice" in it.

Traditional materialism has no answer for why decent people are so frequently miserable and so forth. Of course, from the perspective of medicine, psychology, and other sciences, each instance can be described individually; but, these disciplines can only explain and study the mechanism of what occurred, not the underlying causes.
God's will and sin are central to the practices of historic monotheistic faiths.
Sins of the original sin (or, more accurately, damage) committed by Adam and Eve, sins of the ancestors (transmitted from one generation to the next), and personal sins all work against the Christian goal of a restored relationship between God and humanity.
And God's will is beyond human comprehension. The Lord's ways are mysterious, as the saying goes. In addition, the idea that one's soul needs to be purified by suffering. And those whom I love the most I scold and chastise.
