# Bitcoin como bien público.
#  Bitcoin as a public good.

- I watched a talk by Jack Mallers, CEO of Strike, a centralized exchange and money transmitter business, and then I read the article on Medium of the same name, from which some of Jack Mallers slides came from which he used in his talk. I enjoyed each presentation of this interesting idea, from their respective perspectives, and I wish to give my third personal persepctive.

## Bitcoin the blockchain and bitcoin the token, a Public Good?
- It's a interesting concept to call a cryptocurrency blockchain and it's utility token, bitcoin, a public good, but I think they both have a point worth discussing.
- Their thesis is that bitcoin, and the Bitcoin blockchain, are a public good similar to the internet.

## What is a Public Good in the Digital Age?
- The example given, as the first Public Good in the Digital Age is the internet.
- They feel this way because the internet represents a revolutionary step into the future of the exchange of information; where everyone has access to the information on the internet, and anyone can exchange information on the internet.
- This idea where everyone has access to the internet and the information on the internet and the ability to exchange information on the internet, represents a revolutionary breakthrough in how humans store, distribute and access information in the current era called the Digital Age.

## Why Bitcoin and bitcoin?
- The thesis they both put forward, in their words, which are different and perhaps more lengthy and complex then mine, is this: Bitcoin the blockchain, and bitcoin the token, represent a technological revolution in the way humans send value across the internet, as money. Money being the medium of exchange for goods and services.
- The basis of this revolution, and what they call a factual description of our current monetary system; we don't send money over the internet now, we send a promise to pay money, over the internet. And a Promise to pay is called a debt. So we don't actually send money, over the internet,  we send debts over the internet. 
- The second part of their thesis is that Bitcoin is a revolution in the way humans send money, the medium of exchange for goods and services over the internet. When we send bitcoin over the Bitcoin blockchain, we are not sending a promise to pay, we are sending the payment.
- The last part of their thesis is an objective proof of their thesis, the current system of sending value or money, the medium of exchange for goods and services has a settlement period; defined as the amount of time you must wait to actually be paid, once someone sends you a message agreeing to pay you for your goods or services in the current monetary system, which is 2 to 30 days. This is called Delayed Settlement, or in common language delayed payment.
However when you send value, or money, in the form of bitcoin over the Bitcoin blockchain, settlement, as defined as when you actually get paid, not when you receive the promise to pay, but instead the time you actually get paid, is instantaneous. Otherwise known as immediate settlement. This is the proof of their thesis that bitcoin payments, over the Bitcoin blockchain, represent a technological breakthrough in how humans make payments.
- Both presentations use their words and explanations to compare the Bitcoin blockchain and bitcoin token to the internet. And both predict that transactions which represent the exchange of money, in the form of bitcoin, over the Bitcoin blockchain,  will one day be as common as the exchange of information, over the internet.
- Thus they both conclude that Bitcoin, and bitcoin are a global public good, just like the internet.
