## Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano on the planet.
The Hawaiian name *Mauna Loa* literally means "long mountain" in Hawaiian.

## Lava Lava Everywhere
 
There have been many lava flows from Mauna Loa over the years, and it is still an active volcano. The last eruption was in 1984, and the lava flowed towards the largest city on the island Hilo, but luckily missed it by four miles on its way to the sea. The lava was so bright that it illuminated the city at night. Lava always flows downhill from the mountain to the sea, and nothing can stop it
 
>Geologists estimate that Mauna Loa has been erupting for some 700,000 years and peaked its head above water just 400,000 years ago. Today, Mauna Loa continues to expel lava, thus adding acreage of the ever-expanding island.

Three active volcanoes Mauna Loa, Kilauea and Mauna Kea. Mauna Loa last erupted in 1984, and it is the largest volcano in the world.
Mauna Kea, the tallest volcano and the tallest mountain in the world. And Kilauea a smaller volcano which erupted in 2019.
