Welcome to my post about 1/2oz lunars and why I stack them every year. Everyone knows what these are and most people will own some sort of Perth Mint lunar coin. They have been around for years and we are on the second series at the minute. I started stacking these 3 years ago, so I have the goats, monkeys and this year’s rooster.
Around 3 years ago, I had been stacking whatever for 1 year and had decided it was time to make a stacking plan. While researching what coins I should buy every year, I noticed that the premium on this coin when it came to resale was quite high compared to the buying premium which is also a little on the high side.

I have 2 exit plans for these bad boys. 1/ Sell them on eBay are thesilverforum to get the best return for my investment are, 2/ This one is will take a lot more time but I think would be far more rewarding. This one involves me buying 50 of each of the remaining years of series 2. When I add the 3 years I already have and the 2 years remaining, I will have 50 coins per year and have 250 total coins. For the next 12 years for series 3, I would go to thesilverforum and swap out auction style 20 of my older lunars for that year’s release. I assume as the years roll by I will get more and more new release coins for my older ones. Over the course of series 3 and swapping out coin each year, I hope to finish with a min of 25 full series 3 sets and a lot of spare extras.

I would like to get to a point where I am able to sale my older bullion with premiums attached for new releases and rinse and repeat this cycle until retirement. If I can sell x10 5 year old pandas and buy 13 new release pandas, I will be happy. I do not want to be investing in silver forever, I would prefer it work for me so I can focus on gold, stock market is even a rental property. Right now I have finished the 3rd year of my 5 year silver plan. I had planned to move into gold for 5 years after but that was 3 years ago and cypto’s may force me to change my plans. So it looks like these silver coins have a bit of collector value. I would imagine people would want all 13 coins of the zodiac. Here in the United States people used to collect quarters from every state.

Yes, i started on the 8th year. But i have also wrote how to convert those 250 coins from series into a min of 20 full series 3 sets over time. Its far to expensive for me to backdate and the idea of swapping out series 2 to self fund my series sounds good to me. I can repeat this until im old and grey as long as the Perth mint keeps making the series. When series 4 is out, each i could sell 1 full set of series 3 to fund a 20 roll of that years release. At the end of series 4 i would have 20 full series sets and 8 remaining series 3 sets worth a decent premium. It would just go on and go like that. 

Dont know much about quarters, are they silver ones?

Cool, 1/2 oz silver Perth Mint Lunars, are great fractionals. In the future, a 1/2 oz. fractionals, will really come in handy, when you need to fill up your car's gas tank.

1/2 oz and smaller will become more common in teh future i think. We might buy 1/10 oz coins in 20 years the way we buy 1 oz coins now. And i aint using no sexy lunar to pay for any gas, i have 1/2oz apmex rounds for that. Lunars would more for a fancy dinner with the wife in some posh place, haha.

I'm doing the same thing.. The half ounce are the best option and then the 2 ounce. The lowest mintages are probably the 5 ounce but not many collectors for those so a fairly niche market.
My stack is just about self funding now after 5 years of stacking
I also do this with older Britannia's

Sounds like we are doing the same thing. I also hold some old brit's. I have the complete date run with extra 2001's and 2005's. I bought all my brit's from 1999 until 2007 for 19 euro each during a crazy sale and at the time, the euro was around 1.40. Ohhh, good times. I think our 5 year plans should be enough to self fund out stacking habits :)

I only get this many for the 1/2 oz's. For the 1 oz, i get 3 and i get 1 2 oz every year also. I like getting them in rolls of 10, i get get them over 5 orders and the dog will be out soon :)

Makes sense to me and i have a sort of 5 year Rolling plan and should mean i get more the next year and so on. as well as other stuff going on with the stack. although i have been thinking that maybe selling as soon as i can get say 20% return after fees & postage maybe better. all good while prices are kind of low and within a good range. but i guess if i can make 20% profit in a year and every year thats better than 50% in 5 years. you may make more on certain coins than others. but i guess what really matters is turning over as many profits as you can over and over as quick as you can rather than holding out for bigger profits.

I think over time and doing this over and over you will know exactly what coins to buy for whatever time frame to are planning to hold them for. But yes, more flipping would i guess mean profits are more oz's in our case. In 2 more years, i will be flipping out every year with a 5 years of stock at hand. I looking forward to it because i know the 2018's will be comming soon

That's a great approach, I need a strategy like that. When I started a year ago I said I'd get a single roll of ASEs every year. Well I hit that target last year and again this year but I couldn't stop and I just buy whatever I can. I'm not very savvy with it yet but I've got a weight I'm okay with so I might have to look into some more collectible coins for resale purpose. I'm still working for my silver and slowly trying to figure out how to make it work for me. Good post, now I have to go re-evaluate my stack. 👍

Different people roll in different ways. I like having a plan because it makes me feel like my stacking has purpose. You only need a plan when your selling buddy. You say your buying cheap second hand stuff, sounds cheap to me and cheap normally means close to spot. Sounds like you have a good plan :D
