This money is kept safe by a spell called [blockchain](https://peakd.com/blockchain/@simplestack/what-is-a-blockchain-eli5?ref=simplestack). This spell is like a super-secret vault that can’t be broken into.

The value of this money isn’t set by a bank or a government. Instead, it’s decided by how much people want it, how they use it, how they price their goods and services in terms of this new money and by the fact that no one can control it.

# The New Money

Imagine a country called Cardania. The money they use is called Ada. It’s like the dollar in the US or the euro in Europe.

In the past, this country used dollars…but a group of malevolent magicians and villains took control of all them.

They ended controlling all the machines that produced them, so they could be the only ones with that power. They used that power to control how rich they could be, and how poor the nation could turn into. They also could create a lot of money if they wanted to fund wars between them and other kingdoms, people would starve to death while kings and nobles would live lavishly.

They also casted a spell on all the dollars, so they could control what each of their citizens could buy. Making it almost impossible to innovate if your ideas went against the government.

And those were only the tips of the iceberg…

Then a hero appeared, his name was Satoshi Nakamoto. He created a new kind of money that no single person could control and gave power back to the people. Basically starting a revolution.

This magic money is protected by a powerful spell that no single mage or villain can break alone. It would take an enormous amount of villains and magicians working together to do so, but because they don’t really trust each other…well, it’s more likely that you win the lottery twice in a row than all of them working together as a team.

The more people use and trust this new money called Ada, the more powerful the protective spell becomes.

Just like how a dollar can be divided into cents, Ada can be divided into smaller pieces called Lovelace. It’s like having pennies in your pocket.

So, Ada is the main new money in Cardania, and Lovelace is the smallest amount of Ada you can have.

And with that, the government started fearing its people again. All wars were over because no king could create money out of thin air anymore, economy started flourishing again, people started trusting each other more, and the balance of power went back to all of the inhabitants of Cardania, to every single one of them.

# Custom Tokens

Imagine Cardania is also a big playground where you can create your own toys. These toys are called tokens.

You can make different kinds of toys. Some toys are all the same, like marbles (these are called fungible tokens). Others are unique, like action figures (these are called non-fungible tokens).

You can use these toys to play games, trade with friends, or even use them as money. It’s a fun way to create new things and do new things on the Cardania playground.

> Maybe you would like your business to accept a particular kind of token instead of Ada. But instead of creating a new one from thin air, you create one from the same energy and magic of Ada…giving it similar properties and connecting its value to Ada.
