Mr. Ahmed was sitting comfortably on his rocking chair, reading the day's newspaper. It has become his hobby. At 65 years of age, and all his kids grown up and married, there barely is much to do with his time. And he quite enjoys this lone, slightly lazy time by himself. Especially during the winter the heat of the 10 a.m. sun, streaming in through the grills of the balcony window leaves quite the pleasant tinge. All 7 of his grandchildren, 3 of them in their late teens, a couple in mid teens and the two eldest well into adulthood, are usually at school, college or university at this time of the day. But the Covid has everyone locked in the house, so it's not that lonely during the day. But the kids are usually nose deep into their smartphones, facebook and all those nonsense things they call apps or something. he doesn't understand any of it, but he sure does appreciate having them all around. _25th November, 2020_ Winter came a bit late this year. Everything about this year has been frustrating for the world, so why not the winter too heh! Nonetheless, it was finally here and while Mr. Ahmed was enjoying reading his daily newspaper, rocking gently on his cozy chair, one of his grandson rushed to the balcony. "Dadu, did you hear the news? Diego Maradona died." The kid left as fast as he had rushed to the balcony. Is this a joke? His grandchildren are what he would refer to as _"pajir pajhara."_ All 7 of them and they are constantly trying to pull pranks on him _(which he enjoys)._ But this was too close to the heart, would these _"spawns of hell"_ strike a blow so much below the belt? Mr. Ahmed is known in the neighborhood for his mad enthusiasm in his youth for the Argentina Football team. So essentially, whenever any breaking news breaks out regarding Argentine football, his grandchildren would rush to tell him. He sat there for a while, the newspaper still on page 12. His eyes fixed on it, but he was no longer reading. Very slowly he folded the newspaper and set it aside. He clutched the sides of his rocking chair as he stood up and walked to the living room to turn on the TV. His Nokia 1100 phone doesn't have any of those app things, so the TV is his only source of verifying news. All the news channels read the same breaking news, Diego Armando Maradona is no more. He walked to his room and took out the old scrapbook from the bottom shelf of his book-case. He hadn't looked at it in ages. He hand made the book with numerous paper cuttings and pocket sized postcards of the different talents from Argentina, it was mostly Maradona....the footballing god who taught the world what a "one-man-show" really looks like. And it was magnificent, as it should be. He let out a deep sigh as the hollowness he felt inside grew deeper with every second that passed by and he processed the loss of someone he began to idolize very early in his life. Maradona didn't know of his existence, but it didn't matter. Maradona passed away, but Diego lives in his memories, such inexplicable is being a fan. He searched frantically for something in his Clothing cupboard as he recalled his days during a football world cup....how every rooftop of every house in the neighborhood would have flags of different countries, mostly Argentina or Brazil...showing support for their teams. Kids these days don't seem to find this a proper use of their time. They are much more calculative when it comes to passion. To think of it now, it does seem a bit silly to him....but what is passion without a bit of silliness...without a bit of illogical madness! But that's all in the youth. He was an old man now. Those days are way past him. He can't remember the last time he hoisted a flag before a world cup. He had given up these 'madness' for good long time ago. Ah there it is, he found it at long last. The sky blue-white fabric. He pulled it out with all the care in the world. He felt his hair follicles run goosebumps all over....just like back in the '80s when one Diego Armando Maradona ran through the English defence and scored what stayed a benchmark goal, even to this day. With trembling legs, he climbed the stairs to the rooftop.
