Today I have brought you a recipe made from a fruit which is about to start its season and it is the mamón (Melicoccus bijugatus), a plant native to Venezuela, which has spread to other countries in the world. The mamón is delicious, it has a soft pulp (mucilage), which can be very sweet, but also acidic, depending on the degree of maturation and the type of plant. In my backyard there is a tree, which in previous years was huge, it was approximately 25 meters high. It had the particularity of flowering and fruiting a little later than the rest of the trees of its species, and its fruits were generally double and with a large amount of pulp. About 10 years ago I ordered it to be pruned, because there was a risk that it would fall on top of the neighboring house, but I don't know what they did to it, it has been progressively declining, and it now practically has a living branch left, and its trunk is almost undone. Before it dies, I will try to reproduce it by cuttings, because its genetics are excellent, it deserves to be preserved and propagated. </div>

Hoy les he traído una receta hecha a partir de una fruta la cual ya va iniciar su temporada y se trata del mamón (Melicoccus bijugatus), una planta nativa de Venezuela, que se ha extendido a otros países del mundo. El mamón es delicioso, tiene una pulpa suave (mucílago), que puede ser muy dulce, pero también ácida, dependiendo del grado de maduración y del tipo de planta. En mi solar hay un árbol, que en años anteriores fue enorme, tenía una altura de 25 metros aproximadamente. Él tenía la particularidad de florecer y dar frutos un poco más tarde que el resto de los árboles de su especie, y por lo general sus frutos eran dobles y con gran cantidad de pulpa. Hace como 10 años lo mandé a podar, pues había el riesgo de que cayese encima de la casa vecina, pero no sé qué le hicieron, que progresivamente ha ido decayendo, y ya prácticamente le queda una sala rama viva,  y su tronco está casi deshecho. Antes de que muera, trataré de reproducirlo por esquejes, porque su genética es excelente, merece conservarse y propagarse.</div>

<div class="text-justify"> My tree no longer bears fruit, but two days ago, one of my neighbors, who has a huge mamón tree, gave me two small segments of this fruit, (which I understand is very rich in iron and phosphorus, so it is excellent for human health). Although the quality of these mamones is not as good as the one my tree gave me, I appreciated his gesture, and I thought of making a recipe that is consumed in several regions of Venezuela. Its name is something particular, it is called "mamonada", because it is a milkshake made from mamones, and therefore milk of animal origin is used in its preparation. # <center> THE RECIPE / LA RECETA </center>

<center><b>Time, ingredients and equipment</b></center>

+ Preparation time: This is a very simple recipe, which only requires some patience and a little effort to detach the pulp from the seed, so it will be ready in a maximum of 10 minutes.
+ Servings: 800 ml of mammon milkshake.
+ 150 ml of water
+ 500 ml of plant-based milk (I used [oat milk]( https://peakd.com/hive-180569/@sirenahippie/eng-esp-oat-milk))
+ 150 grams of mamones.

+ Sweetener to your liking, (I used 1 tablespoon of white sugar, but you can use whatever you have at home).

+ Ice cubes (optional).

+ Jug, manual whisk, strainer, teaspoon, cup, glasses, etc.</div>

+ Tiempo de preparación: Esta es una receta muy simple, que solo requiere algo de paciencia y un poquito de esfuerzo para desprender la pulpa del mamón de la semilla, así que en 10 minutos máximo estará lista.
+ Raciones: 800 ml de merengada de mamón.
+ 150 ml de agua
+ 500 ml de leche de origen vegetal (yo usé de [leche de avena]( https://peakd.com/hive-180569/@sirenahippie/eng-esp-oat-milk))
+ 150 gramos de mamones.

+ Endulzante a tu gusto, (yo utilicé 1 cucharada de azúcar blanca, pero puedes usar lo que tengas en casa).

+ Cubos de hielo (opcional).

+ Jarra, batidor manual, colador, cucharilla, taza, vasos, etc.</div>

These I had already washed previously, even when I saw that my neighbor took them directly from the branch of his tree. This fruit has a somewhat hard shell, which can be easily opened by making a small incision, this is enough to open it. Look at the beautiful salmon color it has, it's something very delicate </div>

><div class="text-justify">Lo primero que hacemos es lavar los mamones. Para ello los colocas bajo el chorro del agua  a fin de desprender la suciedad que tengan en el exterior. Estos ya los había lavado previamente, aún cuando vi que mi vecino los tomó directamente de la rama de su árbol. Este fruto tiene una cáscara algo dura, que puede abrirse fácilmente haciéndole una pequeña incisión, con esto es suficiente para abrirla. Miren el hermoso color salmón que tiene, es algo muy delicado.</div>

<div class="text-justify"> We extract all the mamones from their shells and place them in a jar with 100 ml of water (for this amount of fruit). I do not use a blender or processor, because I am only interested in the pulp adhered to the seed, and blending it would imply that the seed would also be ground and at the same time damage the blade and motor of the blender or processor; so I use this simple wooden instrument, which is kind of a cross between a mill and a beater (I think @hindavi has one just like this in his Indian kitchen).</div>

No uso la licuadora o procesador, porque sólo me interesa la pulpa adherida a la semilla, y licuarla implicaría que se moliera también la semilla y a la vez se dañara el aspa y el motor de la licuadora o procesador; así que utilizo este sencillo instrumento de madera, que es una especie de cruce de molino con batidor (creo que @hindavi tiene uno igualito a este en su cocina hindú).  </div>

Then I strain the mixture, placing the seeds on a plate, while I take advantage of the pulp that remains in the strainer. I carry out the same procedure again with the wooden whisk, adding the other 100 ml of water. I strain again. </div>

This time I served it in a glass with ice cubes, but I think it's better when taken very cold from the fridge. The taste of this drink is soft, pleasant, you can feel the acidity of the mamón that combines very well with oat milk. This meringue can be taken alone or as an accompaniment to a meal, today I had some sandwiches for dinner and I accompanied them with this drink, it combined very well. So: Cheers!</div>

En esta ocasión la serví en un vaso con cubos de hielo, pero creo que es mejor cuando se toma muy fría de la nevera. El sabor de esta bebida es suave, agradable, se siente la acidez del mamón que combina muy bien con la leche de avena. Esta merengada se puede tomar sola o como acompañante de alguna comida, yo hoy cené unos sándwichs y los acompañe con esta bebida, combinó muy bien. Así que: ¡Salud!</div>

You can make your non-vegan version, including cow's milk in the preparation, it is to everyone's taste. This drink is very nutritious, tasty and really nice, so I invite you to make this recipe. I also wanted to tell you, that I remember my Aunt Chichita told me, that at the beginning of the 20th century, this area of Venezuela was devastated by a plague of locusts, which meant that all the crops and fruits were devastated, leaving the population without food, and animals without feed. A great famine arose. My aunt said, that my grandmother and my great-grandmother told her, that many people survived, (including my family), thanks to the fact that it was time for mamones, so the plague only ate the peel and pulp of these fruits, but not the seed. These seeds were collected by the people, to remove a layer that they have adhered to, to later toast, grind and make arepas or bread with those seeds. Here you can see which part I mean. Esta bebida es muy nutritiva, sabrosa y realmente agradable, así que te invito a  hacer esta receta. Quería también comentarles, que recuerdo mi Tía Chichita me contaba, que a inicios del Siglo XX, esta zona de Venezuela fue asolada por una plaga de langostas, lo que implicó que todas las siembras y los frutos fueran arrasados, quedándose la población sin comida, y los animales sin pienso. Una gran hambruna se presentó. Mi tía decía, que mi abuela y mi bisabuela le contaron, que muchas personas sobrevivieron, (incluyendo mi familia), gracias a que era tiempo de mamones, entonces la plaga sólo se comió la cáscara y la pulpa de estos frutos, pero no la semilla. Esas semillas eran recogidas por la gente, para desprenderles una capa que tienen adherida, para luego tostar, moler y hacer arepas o pan con esas semillas. Aquí pueden ver a qué parte me refiero. Hola Sirena, 
Este jugo es delicioso  lo he probado sin leche. Ese batidor de madera lo tenía mi abuela, con ella hacia el dulce o mermelada de mamón: brutalmente deliciosa... se me hizo aguamiel la boca... jajajaj 

Es lamentable lo sucedido con tu árbol de mamón, bendecido son los que pueden tener un árbol frutal. 
Gracias por la historia de tus ancestras y por favor, escribe y compila lo dicho para que mantengas viva estas memorias.

No había visto tu comentario, disculpa que responda tan tarde. Este batidor era de mi Tía Chichita, ella no lo usó mucho, pero yo ahora sí. Mi tía también hacía grandes ollas de dulce de mamón, muy delicioso. 

Bueno, ya viene la temporada de mamones, de seguro podrás hacer este jugo, mermelada y dulce y recordar a tu abuelita.

Lo de mi árbol fue triste, pero creo que voy a sacar muchos arbolitos clones para conservar y difundir esa estupenda genética.

Epa me falto el cuento del batidor jajaja, mi bisabuela y mi nona usaron estos batidores de madera, tenían unos hechos de ramificaciones, no eran tallados, las propias ramas tenían una forma muy particular, tenían tanto uso en esos fogones de leña que su color era oscuro, eran tan mágicos que lo batieras con ellos quedaba espumoso y cremoso y con el sabor de campo... ese que lleva el amor de las manos de quien lo uso por tanto tiempo

Tarde pero seguro jajaja, he llegado , esta por escribirte y acá toy 😁, nunca me imagine hacer un jugo con esta rica fruta, debe ser muy delicioso por su sabor entre acido y dulce, uff me lo imagino y se me hace agua la boca, recuerdo que en la vieja casa donde crecí había un gran árbol en la casa vecina, sus ramas daban con uno de nuestros techos y me tocaba subir a limpiar las hojas y en ocasiones podar para que el techo no sufriera daños por el peso de la enormes ramificaciones, el cuento es que este árbol jamás le agarraban los fruto y los mamones eran muy grandes, su tamaño era tres veces mas de lo normal, eran tan dulces que parecían estar rellenos de azúcar, su tamaño comenzó a triplicarse cuando yo empecé a recolectar cada año sus frutos, la poda hizo también que el árbol renaciera más fuerte y más frondoso, la cantidad de frutos era impresionantes... 
Jajaja yo y mis cuentos vale, es más largo pero ya será para la próxima edición que le diré el fin 😜

Great recipe! The best thing in this summer is a cold drink and I would love to try this. I have never heard of this fruit before and I think it doesn't exist in Turkey :/

This plant grows in tropical areas, I think Turkey is located in a temperate zone, however, if you happen to see this fruit one day in a market, try to eat it, you will not be disappointed in its taste.

Hola @sirenahippie el mamón es una de mis frutas preferida, cuando es el tiempo , como bastante, pero el jugo no he tomado, en estos días compraré y haré el jugo, debe ser muy refrescante. Gracias por compartir.

Que delicioso se ve ese jugo de mamon,  se me hizo agua la boca. Siempre tuve curiosidad de como pudiese hacerse y aunque tenía una idea de hacerlo como lo explicas,  realmente me aclaraste la duda.

Espero que puedas sembrar hijitos del árbol y que sobrevivan, seria una lastima que dejara de existir sin dejar rastro.  Seguro la persona que lo podo no tenia buena mano para eso o estaba pasando un mal momento y no tuvo buena energía al cortarlo.

Hola @verdesmeralda, disculpa mi respuesta tardía. Sí, el jugo de mamón tiene su particularidad, pues la semilla es muy dura, eso destruye aspas y motor de las licuadoras, y ni qué decir de los procesadores.

Voy a sacar varios clones de ese árbol, porque realmente es extraordinario, esto lo publicaré también, para que cuando quieran hacer un procedimiento similar, les sea sencillo hacerlo. Y sí, quién podó el árbol no tenía en absoluto buena energía.
