He regresado hoy, 21 de Marzo 2023, para mostrarles una curiosa visita que llegó de forma inesperada a mi hogar, y digo que es inesperada, porque generalmente observo los insectos en mi jardín interno y en el patio trasero o solar, pero en esta oportunidad llegó a la puerta principal, la que da a la calle.</div>

<div class="text-justify">Mi esposo había salido en la mañana a hacer algunas compras, pero al regresar se topó con este hermoso insecto, posado en la reja protectora de la puerta, y se sorprendió (al igual que yo), porque es poco común ver aquí saltamontes tan grandes, generalmente son más pequeños y de un color verde intenso, y este no, pues tenía diversos colores, tonalidades y su morfología es muy peculiar, al punto que me hizo recordar una historia que me contaba mi Tía Chichita, de cuando la plaga de la langosta llegó a esta zona de los llanos venezolanos. Ella sabía esa historia porque su mamá y su abuela se la contaban, y según recuerdo, ocurrió a inicios del pasado siglo XX, hace más de 100 años, cuando una terrible plaga de langosta llegó por estos predios y arrasó con toda la vegetación, dejando a la población sin comida, (recordemos que en ese tiempo no existían en mi país las cadenas de comercialización y distribución de alimentos, y la gente vivía de lo que producía en el campo). Lo cierto es, que mi tía me contaba que su abuela y su mamá en ese tiempo recogían del suelo las semillas, (ya despojadas de cáscara y pulpa), de los mamones (Melicoccus bijugatus), que era lo único que dejaban las langostas a su paso, y esas semillas las tostaban, las molían y luego hacían una especie de pan o de arepas, con lo cual mi familia pudo subsistir esa terrible hambruna que duró meses o semanas (no lo sé a ciencia cierta). Se podría decir, que afortunadamente, la plaga llegó en tiempo de mamones, y al menos quedaron las semillas de estos frutos, fue lo único que no consumieron estos insectos.</div>

She knew that story because her mother and grandmother told it to her, and as I remember, it happened at the beginning of the last 20th century, more than 100 years ago, when a terrible plague of locusts came to these areas and destroyed all the vegetation, leaving to the population without food, (remember that at that time there were no food marketing and distribution chains in my country, and people lived off what they produced in the fields). The truth is, my aunt told me that her grandmother and her mother at that time collected the seeds from the ground, (already stripped of shell and pulp), of the mamones (Melicoccus bijugatus), which was the only thing that the lobsters left behind. their passage, and those seeds were roasted, ground and then made a kind of bread or arepas, with which my family was able to survive that terrible famine that lasted months or weeks (I don't know for sure). It could be said that fortunately, the plague arrived in the time of mamones, and at least the seeds of these fruits remained, it was the only thing that these insects did not consume.</div>

<div class="text-justify">De acuerdo a la revisión bibliográfica, (ver enlaces en la sección de bibliografía de este post), este insecto se caracteriza por:</div>

+ Son insectos invertebrados, obviamente, emparentados con los grillos, pero es otra especie. Corresponden al orden <i>Orthoperas</i>.
+ Su tamaño es variable, desde un milímetro a 15 centímetros, tal como el que llegó de visita a mi casa.
+ Poseen dos pares de alas, y dos pares de patas, siendo las traseras las más fuertes y las que les permiten saltar largas distancias.
+ Su cuerpo se divide en cabeza, tórax y abdomen, ubicándose su oído en el abdomen, y su olfato en sus antenas, que según ví, no son tan largas.
+ En los extremos de las patas tienen unas estructuras similares a ganchos, que les dan la capacidad de adherirse a superficies y atrapar su alimento.
+ Aparentemente son herbívoros, salvo que no tengan qué comer y consumen entonces a insectos más pequeños.
+ Su período vital va de 9 a 11 semanas.</div>

<div class="text-justify">Al hacer una revisión bibliográfica más extensa, encontré que también se denominan langostas, que corresponde a un estadio de desarrollo de los saltamontes. Ellos son solitarios, pero puede ocurrir un cambio en su comportamiento y se vuelven gregarios (forman grupos muy grandes y densos), y también migratorios, o sea, se mueven de lugar en lugar en búsqueda de alimento. Supongo que esto fue lo que ocurrió con la plaga de la langosta que me contó mi Tía Chichita; y esto me preocupó, porque aunque yo ví un solo insecto, de acuerdo a la descripción de colores, formas y tamaño, corresponde a un ejemplar con costumbres gregarias, o sea, una langosta. </div>
