A Day Late for Fungi Friday
Here is a day late post for #fungifriday by @ewkaw

Yesterday I did a late evening walk in the forest and finally found a nice edible chicken of the woods.

Sadly there wasn't enough of it to justify harvesting it for a meal. I left it to the slugs and gnats.

There are a few different species of chicken of the woods, I'm not sure just what species this one is so I'll label it under the general term Laetiporus.

I usually find the big deposits of chicken of the woods in late September to early October around here. So hopefully I can find the motherload for some nice buffalo wings...

On another stump I found some really small deposits of chicken of the woods. They were getting approached by quite the predator that I compete with on a continual basis.

Here is a bit of white jelly roll fungi.

This is what white jelly roll looks like after a bit of aging in the dry summer heat. Technically this is edible but it has no real culinary value as it basically turns into slime and has no taste after cooking.

Speaking of slime, here is a bit of dog vomit slime mold aka Fuligo septica. It shows up as bright yellow on aging wood mostly in the humidity of summer.

Here is another strange slime mold called white finger slime mold as it has teeny tiny little finger structures to it when zoomed in. The Latin name is Ceratiomyxa fruticulosa. As far as I know it has no real uses other than to decompose old wood.
