Here's a #featheredfriends post for @melinda010100 of some wild monk parakeets in Illinois.  It was a dark gray day out today and I took my zoom lens for a walk to get a few shots of these wild parakeets.  As spring is ramping up here, these guys were out gathering sticks for their large nests.  This guy was eyeing me wondering what I was doing. I bet it is used to various birders with big lenses stopping by to take pictures of him and his family.  Here's another one that just managed to rip off a twig for its nest. The darker background helped its green color stand out in the overcast day. Fortunately the leaves aren't growing on these trees yet either, they would become totally camouflaged among the leaves.  Here's a couple more green characters gathering twigs.  Now each one of them has a stick to carry back to the nest. They are getting ready to take off.  Off I go to add to my massive twig nest.  Here is a shot of one of their nests. These monk parakeets or quaker parrots make massive twig nests in the wild that can span several feet high. These wild Illinois parrots have taken refuge in a power plant's transformers. This is a perfect area as the whole place is fenced off from predators and the power lines confuse hawks. The power company allows them to build the nests to a certain height before trimming them down each year. The birds have figured this out and have built many shorter nests located around the power complex.  I was able to get to edge of the fence and catch a few shots of the parrots flying in and out of their nest areas.  Here is one that made a nest inside the ibeam tower. I wonder of the electricity keeps them warm somehow. Seems to work though these parrots have been living in this area for quite a few years possibly since the 70s.  Here's a family of them sitting outside near their nests. I estimate at least 30-60 birds live throughout the power plant area.  Here's another three birds in a different area. I wonder how many babies they have in their nests...  There are quite a few neighborhoods nearby that these parrots can get their treats at. They also like to eat leaf buds, various grasses, seeds and other tree nuts. I read somewhere that these monk parakeets range all the way up to Milwaukee Wisconsin so keep an eye out in your area @melinda010100. Birders can probably ask a power plant worker if they have any parrots in their hubs for intel.  This robin is looking in at the parrots and their loud cackling wondering why they live there.  Robin is outta here, gotta get the worms.  This mourning dove gets it. The power lines confuse the hawks and this is a safe area to perch. Hopefully I can get back to this area on a more sunny day to help my zoom lens capture clearer shots of these colorful parrots/parakeets. There are many theories on how these guys ended up here in Illinois but I suspect the pet trade brought them here and maybe a shipment of them escaped into the wild and took a foothold. Seems they are here for good I'm sure a few generations have already been born.

Yeah and I only just discovered them living around 4 miles from where I live. I heard people talk about them being around but I never knew their exact location until I went walking on a bike path and saw one in the trees last week. This morning I finally went out with my zoom lens and caught lots of them pretty easily. They are pretty wild though and fly off if you get to close hence the zoom lens.

I know they have been seen all the way up the coast up to Milwaukee. But it turns out I live only around 4 miles away from the motherload of them in Illinois. Hopefully it will get sunny again, that's when the telephoto lens takes the best pictures.
