<div class="text-justify"><p>¡Greetings, fellow Steemians! Today, we are going to continue with the Console Wars, studying every videogame console of our time. This time is the turn of a console with no predecessor: A console that is the debut of its maker in the home consoles market, ¡with a massive success! That’s right, my friends. We are going to talk about XBOX, the first home console of Microsoft.</p></div>

<div class="text-justify"><p>Microsoft XBOX is a console part of the sixth generation of home consoles, launched on November 15th, 2001 in North America, and the next year worldwide. Was made by Microsoft using X86 architecture, the very same they used to develop personal computers. Microsoft didn´t work on XBOX alone, by the way: ¡they worked with some real titans in the computing industry! Intel made the internal processor, nVIDIA made the graphic and multimedia processors, and Samsung made the RAM model for some models of the console.</p></div>

<div class="text-justify"><p>XBOX was a massive success on the sales department, selling about 24 million units total at the end of its commercialization. This obviously represented an awesome debut for Microsoft that was somewhat worried about the future of the PC gaming, due to the strength of home consoles such as Sega Dreamcast and Sony PlayStation 2. Fortunately for them, XBOX (or its first name, DirectX-Box) made a brilliant entry to such market.</p></div>

<div class="text-justify"><p>¿How was the process for Microsoft to earn a place in the home consoles market? ¡The challenge was indeed huge! They had to face companies that had a place on this market for decades, for instance the mighty Nintendo or Sega, and new companies that already got a place on the market, such as Sony, with their powerful PlayStation. To bring customers, Microsoft focused on the raw power of the console, also selling XBOX as a near-PC home console (they weren´t lying: XBOX is way more similar to a PC than a console: as a matter of fact, XBOX is the only console of its generation that featured an internal hard disk drive by default). On top of that, XBOX featured killer multimedia capabilities: it can play a lot of audio and video formats, and had a strong online connectivity.</p></div>


<div class="text-justify"><p>If we analyze the results of their strategy, we can see that, even if Microsoft wasn´t the winner of the console wars for its generation, XBOX had a very comfortable start, a state even more remarkable considering that was a debutant console: ¡They even won in England! XBOX got the second place on total sales in the United States and the third place in Europe, really close of the Nintendo Gamecube. However, all the news weren´t good: ¡XBOX was a failure in Japan! It’s worth mentioning that the real goal of Microsoft was not to win the war, but penetrate the consoles market. Even Microsoft informed that, at the end of XBOX’s life span, that they lost about 154 million dollars total. Although it is a massive amount of money, they saw it not as a loss, but an investment. ¡a very profitable one at the end!</p></div>

<div class="text-justify"><p>If we only considered hardware, ¡XBOX would be the ultimate winner of the console wars of its generation! XBOX is WAY more powerful that its rivals (PlayStation 2, Sega Dreamcast and Nintendo Gamecube). These are its technical specifications: </p></div>


<div class="text-justify"><p><b>CPU:</b> Intel Pentium III custom, 32-bit 733 MHz, based in the Coppermine CPU family</p></div>

<div class="text-justify"><p><b>RAM memory:</b> 64 MB DDR SDRAM running at 200 MHz, 128-bit dual channel mode, for a total of 6400 MB/S (6,4 GB/Second)</p></div>

<div class="text-justify"><p><b>Graphic chipset:</b> nVIDIA NV2A ASIC running at 233 MHz, able to deliver 15 million vortex per second. ¡not bad!</p></div>

<div class="text-justify"><p>Being the first console EVER from its makers, it wasn´t surprising that XBOX had some issues. It was heavily attacked by modders, who saw in the new console a huge modding potential, mainly based on the important similarities between XBOX and a standard PC, what made it somewhat easy to hack. Despite the heavy countermeasures Microsoft took, mainly based on constant hardware revisions, XBOX was, in the end, the favorite console for modding, hardware and software alike.</p></div>


<div class="text-justify"><p>Hardware modding was commonly performed by doubling the standard RAM memory, and installing PC disc drives to replace the original faulty ones. Software modding was focused on the installation of emulators for other consoles like PlayStation, Super Nintendo and many others. They also install custom dashboards and operating systems that allowed to install even more homebrew programs and applications.</p></div>


<div class="text-justify"><p>Besides the hacking issue, main complaint about XBOX is, without a doubt, the DVD unit: pretty easy to mod to allow it to read and play DVD-R with illegally copied games, constant problems with the tray, (opening all the time or remaining closed), or even more problematic ones, like the unit itself causing interference with the operating system. Microsoft tried to fix this using different units made by different companies, but the result was basically the same with all of them: A faulty drive, a tray that keeps stuck and a firmware that caused execution issues.</p></div>

<div class="text-justify"><p>XBOX was indeed a very well received debut for Microsoft in the home consoles market: his enormous hardware power, killer exclusive games such as Halo, Forza and Fable grab the attention of a lot of gamers. It has some issues, but XBOX was, regardless, the card Microsoft played to get in the home gaming market, serving as well as foundation of XBOX’s younger siblings: XBOX 360 and XBOX One. </p></div>
