Tsé Bitʼaʼí ~ Shiprock Monadnock on the Diné (Navajo) Reservation

<p>The traditional Diné name "Tsé Bitʼaʼí," refers to the legend of &nbsp;the great bird that brought the Navajo from the north to their present &nbsp;lands. I will have a much more detailed post on Shiprock later with some &nbsp;really interesting up close images I lensed of the formation.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Governed by the Navajo Nation, the formation is in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Corners">Four Corners</a> region and plays a significant role in Navajo <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion">religion</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myth">myth</a>, and tradition. It is located in the center of the area occupied by the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Pueblo_People">Ancient Pueblo People</a>, a prehistoric Native American culture of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southwest_United_States">Southwest United States</a> often referred to as the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anasazi">Anasazi</a>.&nbsp;</p>
<p>In the foreground is Rock Ridge and Dead Mans Wash while on the &nbsp;left side of the image, that lone standing tower is one of the most &nbsp;sacred places in Dine traditions; Shiprock, which in Diné is called Tsé &nbsp;Bitʼaʼí, meaning either "rock with wings" or "winged rock". &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p>Behind Shiprock in the distance is Table Mesa and Cathedral Cliff and &nbsp;on the right side of the image, those 2 protuberances rising up off the &nbsp;desert floor are Mitten Rock (the larger one) and Rock Mesa (the &nbsp;smaller). &nbsp; &nbsp;</p>
<p>On this clear day &nbsp;I was flying above Little Shiprock Wash when I lensed this image looking across the First Nations Diné (Navajo) Reservation near Four Corners New Mexico.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

Another awesome post, @skypilot. The names of these places are so appropriate; Dead Mans Wash, Shiprock, Cathedral Cliff,  Mitten Rock and Rock Mesa are infinitely better than government surveyors could come up with these days.

Thanks ! When I shoot a place and really like to image I get, the first thing I do is research the history of the location, in particular the obscure and relatively unknown or forgotten history. And I agree with you, I love the old names from these places.

Yehaw!  I just read your website [Where Eagles Fly](http://whereeaglesfly.tv/zedekiah_morse/) and you've been called the Ansel Adams of the Sky.  

I'm from Canada and didn't know that 90% was unpopulated wilderness!  I knew we had a lot of land but did't know how much.

The perspective of land from the sky has always amazed me - your photos remind me of those times I've been on a plane experiencing a 4 dimensional scene.

I really enjoy your work @skypilot.  There is a mountain, part of the Tantalus Range in BC called the Sky Pilot.  That's how I ended up checking out your blog.

Thank you Country Girl. I am planning on shooting all through Canada beginning in a couple years. I am currently filming the Rocky Mountains from the Montana / Canada border all the way south into New Mexico near Santa Fe. Then I am doing the Appalachian Mountain Range, then the Canadian Rockies and finally the Canadian Shield. This will last at least another 6 years of production and I have already been shooting now since 2011.

I too am really interested in the perspective from this special zone "Where Eagles Fly" and I feel this helps expand the visual lexicon with which we use to describe our planet. Glad you found my blog and really appreciate your support and comments! Yehaw!!
