Between mountains, peaks and lagoons... Sierra Nevada National Park, Mérida - Venezuela / PART I [ENG-ESP]

Why do I hike? Why do I climb mountains? These are questions I have asked myself since I started this activity years ago. The first answer that comes to my mind is because I love being among nature and the other is that I like physical challenges.

>*¿Por qué hago senderismo? ¿Por qué subo montañas? Son preguntas que me he hecho desde que hace años comencé a hacer esta actividad. La primera respuesta que me viene a la mente es porque amo estar entre la naturaleza y la otra es que me gustan los retos físicos.*

I'm one of the millions of people around the world who feel something special when they go to the mountains. I see them from below, from afar, and they fascinate me, and when I have the opportunity to climb one, I am overcome with a feeling of fulfillment.

We already know that every experience remains in the memory, but as a photography lover I have tried to keep it also in images so I can see them whenever I want. In this post I share shots of an excursion I made to the lagoons La Coromoto and La Verde, inside the Sierra Nevada National Park in Merida, Venezuela.

These photos were left out of the selection I made when I published here on my blog the story of that two-day excursion, we can almost never upload them all because there are too many for a single post.

Mérida is home to the highest mountains in Venezuela, so it is a mecca for lovers of this type of adventure.
 
>*En Mérida se encuentran las montañas con mayor altura de Venezuela, así que es una meca para los amantes de este tipo de aventuras.*

Sierra Nevada National Park covers an area of 276,446 hectares, most of which belongs to Mérida (67.2%) and the other to Barinas (32.8%). On this excursion we entered through the town of La Mucuy, in Mérida, and from the Park Ranger Station to La Coromoto lagoon, where we set up camp, we hiked 9 km uphill through dense forest.

>*El Parque Nacional Sierra Nevada tiene una extensión de 276.446 hectáreas, la mayor parte pertenece a Mérida (67,2%) y la otra a Barinas (32,8%). En esta excursión nosotros accedimos por la población de La Mucuy, en Mérida, y desde el Puesto de Guardaparques hasta la laguna La Coromoto, donde montamos campamento, caminamos 9 Km en ascenso entre un denso bosque.*

The cold at night is intense, it doesn't even let you sleep, but we were lucky enough to wake up the next day with a radiant sun that was gradually illuminating the mountains around us and reflecting them in the lagoon.

>*El frío en la noche es intenso, ni te deja dormir, pero tuvimos la suerte de amanecer al día siguiente con un sol radiante que iba poco a poco iluminando las montañas a nuestro alrededor y reflejándolas en la laguna.*

With great desire and expectations for the next landscape we were going to see, we left early in the morning towards La Verde lagoon, about 4 km from there.

It's an uphill route with several difficult sections due to the large and small rocks that are there, but it doesn't matter when suddenly the snow-capped Humboldt Peak appears before you.

>*Es una ruta en ascenso y con varios tramos de dificultad debido a las rocas grandes y pequeñas que hay por allí, pero poco importa cuando de repente va apareciendo ante ti el nevado Pico Humboldt.*

At 4,942 meters, it is the second highest in Venezuela after Bolívar peak (4,978) and at its summit is La Corona glacier, the last remaining glacier in the country and sadly at risk of disappearing.

>*Con 4.942 metros, es el segundo más alto de Venezuela después del pico Bolívar (4.978) y en su cima se encuentra el glaciar La Corona, el último que queda en el país y que tristemente está en riesgo de desaparecer.*

When we arrived at La Verde lagoon, I was impressed by how close we could see the Humboldt Peak and by the extraordinary beauty of the whole place. We stayed there for a couple of hours before returning to our camp.

>*Cuando llegamos a la laguna La Verde quedé impactada por lo cerca que se veía el Pico Humboldt y por la extraordinaria belleza de todo este lugar. Allí nos quedamos un par de horas antes de regresar a nuestro campamento.*

By the way, during this excursion my camera showed some failures in the focus, that's why some of the pictures are kind of blurry, I don't know if it was affected by the cold or its age hehehe.

The ecological importance of the Sierra Nevada National Park is enormous, there lives the ecosystem at the highest altitude in Venezuela, with fragile fauna and flora that are sought to preserve to maintain the balance of the area, so if you go hiking here you should take care of the environment to the maximum.

>*La importancia ecológica que tiene el Parque Nacional Sierra Nevada es enorme, allí hace vida el ecosistema a mayor altitud de Venezuela, con fauna y flora frágiles que se buscan preservar para mantener el equilibrio de la zona, por eso si vas de excursión por aquí debes cuidar al máximo el entorno.*

Excelentes imágenes... Lastima lo de la trepidación en algunas fotos, me imagino que tuvo que ver más bien con el mecanismo de estabilización de imagen de la cámara, el cual suele ser sensible a las bajas temperaturas en modelos compactos y bridge... Pero sea como sea, se trata de una selección de imagenes encantadoras, en especial esas de los reflejos en la laguna, la de la piedra centrada en el plano visual y la que tine la rama de a por medio... que bellas... Gracias por compartir... Que lastima que ya nos quede solo un glaciar y que no vaya a durarnos mucho tiempo... Son como los dinosaurios, se están muriendo todos... :(
