According to the World Health Organization, today, 10 October, is World Mental Health Day. It is a good day to become aware of mental disorders, leaving aside the prejudices and stigmas that are commonly held about these diagnoses.
A person with a mental disorder does not try to attract attention, is not ungrateful, nor capricious. He is not a lazy or comfortable person. He is probably going through a very hard time in his life, he probably feels misunderstood, not knowing how to get out of "there", and it is very difficult to know from the outside the magnitude of his pain. The best we can do is offer them our company and support, without criticism or judgment.
The current world situation is atypical, and threatens our mental health: uncertainty, vulnerability, fear of illness and death, are difficult situations to cope with and many times we do not have the tools to overcome them or "feel better". At this time we need our loved ones more than ever, and many times we are far from them, and in quarantine. It is not an easy situation for anyone, that is why this October 10th is so different from previous years.
Many times mental health is neglected because of career, work, family, or partner. Many young people are subjected to risk situations such as substance abuse, risky sexual behavior, self-harm, and suicide risk. It really is time to become aware of these disorders, document ourselves, and understand the importance of taking care of our mental health as well as our physical health.
Some recommendations that I have learned throughout my psychology career to take care of our mental health are the following:
- Plan each day and set short, medium and long term goals
- Get enough rest. At least 8 hours a day.
- Eat a balanced and nutritious diet
- Performing daily physical activity, e.g. walking, dancing, yoga.
- Keeping in touch with friends and family
- Take care of the information that is consumed (movies, newspapers, television and above all, social networks)
- Express emotions through words, or drawings, writings, letters.
- If you need it, go to a psychologist.
How do I know that I should go to a psychologist?
- In case you want to know more about yourself and understand the background of your thoughts, actions...
- In case you experience any significant change in one or more areas of your life: academic, work, family, emotional, social.
- In case you feel tired, sad, or worried most of the day and week, and this generates a significant discomfort in your life.
- In case you experience some non-normative situation and do not know how to handle it: divorce, emigration, mourning, physical illness.
If you are going through a difficult situation I send you a big hug. Remember that it is never too late to ask for help.
