Recuerdo la sonrisa inesperada en mis labios cuando mi papá nos mostró, a mis hermanos y a mí, un codiciado PS2. Mis padres nunca nos acostumbraron a regalos por nuestras altas calificaciones o por nuestra buena conducta, pues tal como sus enseñanzas decían, aquello que se hace desde el corazón y por el bien propio, es la mayor recompensa que alguien puede obtener. Sin embargo, los detalles y los regalos nunca faltaban, aunque surgían así: sin que nadie los esperara. Aquella tarde fue una de las más felices de mi vida, ¿Y saben cuál fue el primer videojuego que probé? Pues nada más y nada menos que God Of War, el título que marcó un antes y un después en mi ciclo  de Gamer.

That afternoon was one of the happiest of my life, and do you know what was the first video game I tried? Well, nothing more and nothing less than God Of War, the title that marked a before and after in my Gamer cycle.

Uno de mis mayores logros como Gamer fue completar la saga clásica de God Of War en PS2, PS3 Y PSP, pero claro, no todo fue color de rosas. Cuando comencé a jugar la primera entrega de Kratos y su venganza contra los dioses tenía unos quince años aproximadamente. El videojuego me sorprendió con la calidad de su narrativa  y la cantidad de cosas con las que podíamos interactuar mientras de fondo, se desarrollaba la evolución de un antihéroe.  Si algo caracterizó a esta aventura de venganza y traición fue su jugabilidad tan visceral y descabellada; una autentica odisea por el principio y el fin de la mitología griega.  

En God Of War nunca faltaba una buena emoción o un desprovisto suspiro. En la primera entrega la aventura se concentró en un Kratos atormentado por las pesadillas de una maldición que lo condenaba a ser el fantasma de Esparta. Algo peculiar en este estilo de Santa Mónica Estudios era esa pequeña cinemática que se disparaba al iniciar la partida por primera vez: el rostro de Katros en diferentes ángulos, mostrando preocupación, orgullo o soledad. Me llegué a aprender todas las cinemáticas que se disparaban en un momento trascendental, como la traición de Zeus, la de Ares y unas cuantas más.  

¿Recuerdan los orbes rojos, verdes y azules? El tutorial siempre se repetía a pesar de que estuvo presente en todas las entregas. Que si los Verdes eran para los puntos de salud, que si los azules para la magia y los rojos para aumentar el nivel de los armamentos. Al respecto de las espadas encadenadas a los brazos de Kratos, me encantaba cuando podía hacer combos letales a los enemigos. Nunca te aburrías porque constantemente tenias que estar apretando botones y  combinándolos con los dedos para derrotar al enemigo. ¡A veces esto se convertía en un autentico dolor de cabeza!

The video game surprised me with the quality of its narrative and the amount of things we could interact with while in the background, the evolution of an antihero was taking place. If something characterized this adventure of revenge and betrayal, it was its visceral and crazy gameplay; an authentic odyssey through the beginning and the end of Greek mythology.

In the first installment, the adventure focused on a Kratos tormented by nightmares of a curse that condemned him to be the ghost of Sparta. Something peculiar in this style of Santa Mónica Estudios was that little cinematic that was triggered when starting the game for the first time: Katros's face at different angles, showing concern, pride or loneliness. I got to learn all the cinematics that were triggered at a momentous moment, like the betrayal of Zeus, the betrayal of Ares and a few more.

>Remember the red, green, and blue orbs? The tutorial was always repeated despite the fact that it was present in all deliveries. What if the Greens were for health points, what if the blues were for magic and the reds to increase the level of weapons. As for the swords chained to Kratos' arms, I loved it when he could do lethal combos on enemies. You never got bored because you constantly had to be pressing buttons and combing them with your fingers to defeat the enemy. Sometimes this became a real headache!

Con God Of War II la aventura se hizo mucho más emocionante gracias a la incorporación de nuevos elementos gráficos y una jugabilidad más interactiva. Ya no era luchar por los dioses, sino en contra de ellos. No saben cuánto me derrumbó esa traición de Zeus, incluso se me cayó el control de la mano, jajaja.  Pero nada fue peor como ese “continuará” al final del videojuego, ¡eso si que fue fatal!   Fue justo en ese momento que me dije: ¿Y ahora qué? La tercera entrega de esta saga no saldría para PS2 sino PS3, y pensar en comprar una nueva consola estaba lejos de mis posibilidades. 

Pero en mi espíritu Gamer God Of War III se proyectaba como una posibilidad lejana, aunque real. Me negaba a ver algún Gameplay por Youtube porque quería vivir y sentir la experiencia por mí mismo. Mientras esperaba ahorrar lo suficiente para el PS3 me sumergí en las entrega restantes de esta saga en PSP. Aunque eran secuelas que no seguían el hilo original, aportaban suficiente información como para entender la vida de Kratos: sus motivaciones y tormentos. Me fascinó Ghost Of Sparta… ¡Vaya Juegazo y el punto definitivo para el odio del nuestro vengativo héroe hacia los dioses griegos! 

God Of War Ghost Of Sparta me ayudó un poco a aplacar mis ganas por jugar la tercera entrega de esta saga. Si bien los eventos de esta historia se desarrollan antes de los acontecimientos en GOW II, y ya estamos al tanto de los conflictos venideros de Kratos, la emoción vivida y las sorpresas suscitadas mantienen al jugador en velo durante todo el videojuego… y su final: nunca pensé que el lado humano de Kratos estuviera tan vivo como el pasado que lo atormentaba.

It was no longer fighting for the gods, but against them. They don't know how much that betrayal of Zeus collapsed me, I even lost control of my hand, hahaha. But nothing was worse than that "to be continued" at the end of the game, that was fatal! It was right at that moment that I said to myself: What now? The third installment of this saga would not come out for PS2 but PS3, and thinking about buying a new console was far from my possibilities.

While waiting to save enough for the PS3 I dove into the remaining installments of this saga on PSP. Although they were sequels that did not follow the original thread, they provided enough information to understand Kratos's life: his motivations and torments. I was fascinated by Ghost Of Sparta... What a great game and the definitive point for our vengeful hero's hatred towards the Greek gods!

Although the events of this story take place before the events in GOW II, and we are already aware of Kratos' upcoming conflicts, the emotion experienced and the surprises raised keep the player in a veil throughout the game... and its ending: I never thought that the human side of Kratos was as alive as the past that haunted him.

Después de casi tres  años de Jugar God Of War II y sus consiguientes precuelas, volvió a mí la necesidad de culminar la saga. 2013 fue ese año en el que se estrenó por primera vez God Of War Ascension… la última aventura de Kratos para PS3. Necesitaba sí o sí terminar este videojuego porque su historia me había enganchado desde el principio. Por fortuna mi hermano compró la consola y, viendo mi emoción por GOW, no dudó en regalarme los dos títulos que me faltaban completar  la saga. ¡Fue toda una gran sorpresa! Supe entonces que si podía terminar lo que había comenzado, jejeje. 

Por muy extraño que Parezca primero jugué God Of War Ascension, ¿Por qué? es que era el titulo más reciente y quería probar que tanto había cambiado Kratos después de mucho tiempo.  Era común ver al principio de cada GOW un villano inicial y obviamente Ascension no iba a ser la excepción. Mucho de esta entrega me recordó tanto a la primera como a la segunda: la aventura se acercaba en su totalidad a ese viaje de liberación y redención. Fue la primera vez que oí a Kratos con voz latina y no española, ¡eso me emocionó muchísimo! Además había muchos elementos nuevos en cuanto al armamento y la arena de combate de los dioses. 

Esta vez las villanas eran las Furias, encargadas de encarcelar a los condenados en sus promesas rotas.  Me gustó tanto God Of War Ascension que lo jugué en todos los modos, desde el más fácil hasta el más difícil.  Una vez que lo culminé supe que solo me faltaba una entrega para culminar la historia de Kratos… se empezaba a asomar la nostalgia.

It was the first time I heard Kratos with a Latin voice and not a Spanish one, that really moved me! In addition there were many new elements in terms of weaponry and the combat arena of the gods.

I liked God Of War Ascension so much that I played it in all modes, from the easiest to the hardest. God Of War III cerró el ciclo de una saga de videojuegos única en su estilo. Creo que fue la versión más visceral de toda la historia de Kratos; con una venganza que consumía todo bajo la sed de sangre. Los acontecimientos siguieron el hilo de God Of War II, con los titanes escalando la cima del monte Olimpo. Los planos de la cámara enfocaban las descabelladas muertes de los dioses, que cayeron  uno a uno en el profundo caos. El escenario aventurero se redujo a un puñado de cámaras y niveles; Kratos debía recuperar lo que alguna vez usó para matar a un Dios. El nivel de los gráficos es maravilloso, ¡digno de un final épico! 

Nunca entendí por qué me encariñé tanto con Kratos, o sea, el tipo era un desquiciado. La saga griega buscaba la verdadera crudeza de un espartano, con un diseño conceptual y una jugabilidad que te involucraba mucho en el videojuego. Después de haber culminado God Of War, me retiré del mundo Gamer por un tiempo. Vendí el PS3 y ya luego supe que saldría una nueva versión del fantasma de Esparta, esta vez para PS4. Sin embargo, debido a mis estudios y responsabilidades (además de la crisis económica venezolana, XD) me alejé del deseo de comprar la cuarta generación de consolas Playstation. ¿Pero saben qué? Estaba feliz porque había logrado completar la saga GOW.  

Fue una era hermosa, en serio, y en estos tiempos en los que he reconectado con los videojuegos gracias a Hive, creo que es momento de iniciar la saga nórdica de God Of War en PS4 y PS5, o al menos en una PC. ¿Se podrá? Yo creo que sí. La memorable historia de Kratos no ha llegado a su fin, después de todo.

The adventurous setting was reduced to a handful of chambers and levels; Kratos was to retrieve what he once used to kill a God. The level of graphics is wonderful, worthy of an epic ending!

However, due to my studies and responsibilities (in addition to the Venezuelan economic crisis, XD) I moved away from the desire to buy the fourth generation of Playstation consoles. But you know what? I was happy because I had managed to complete the GOW saga.

>It was a beautiful era, really, and now that I've reconnected with gaming thanks to Hive, I think it's time to launch God Of War's Nordic saga on PS4 and PS5, or at least on PC. Will it be possible? I think so. Kratos' memorable story isn't over, after all.
