En algún lugar del Japón, escondido entre los árboles alcanforados, existe una criatura solo visible para los ojos que creen en la magia y, de alguna forma, se encuentran inmersos en ella. No tiene nombre conocido, pero Mei le dice Totoro. Parece un gato redondo, con una boca pequeña mientras duerme pero grande cuando sonreír o sopla grandes corrientes de aire.  Le encantan, además, el sonido de las gotas de lluvia estrellándose contra un paraguas; solo sale de noche, y deambula en su autobús viviente que también parece un gato. Tantas referencias surgen de una animación pulcra y renovadora, esencial en su forma de contar una historia con tan poco pero a su vez con mucho. 

Original de los estudios Ghibli y de la mano maestra de Hayao Miyazaki, “Mi vecino Totoro” es una muestra contundente de la riqueza del cine animado japonés, que por supuesto, no tiene nada que envidiarle al occidental.

So many references arise from a neat and renewing animation, essential in its way of telling a story with so little but at the same time with a lot.

No había visto esta película, de hecho, de las creaciones de Miyazaki solo conocía la correspondiente a Chichiro; claro que en mi paseo por la historia de Totoro encontré algunas referencias simbólicas, por ejemplo, en las pelusas vivientes de hollín, el rostro de uno que otro personaje y la ambientación mística y espiritual. Parece que Miyazaki forja su fantasía a través de elementos prominentes de la naturaleza: espacios verdes y frondosos, risas campesinadas, culturas ricas en paz, en normas funcionales y tradiciones ancestrales. Incluir esto en un largometraje y a su vez dirigirlo a la magia y la cotidianidad me parece fascinante, incluso más que las recurrentes producciones en las que la típica aventura y los personajes en conflicto  surgen de las productoras americanas.  

Esto es lo que me ha alejado de la animación originaria de Disney, pues pareciera que las ideas no escaparan más allá de la típica premisa de la aventura lineal, el protagonista al que le sucede algo en los primeros minutos del largometraje y el consecuente viaje emocional para suplir el conflicto. No se puede esperar algo nuevo más que el hincapié de Pixar, aunque pareciera que éste también está obsoleto.  Y sin embargo, no puedo decir que todo sea malo, pero vale la pena mirar hacia otros lares de vez en cuando. Totoro, en este sentido, es una obra que encanta por su argumento sencillo: dos niñas que se mudan a un vecindario rural y que, a la espera de la recuperación de su madre enferma, habrán de conocer a una criatura que vive en el árbol gigante de su jardín.  

Todo es coexistencia y adaptación, sin más. Satsuki y Mei son las niñas de la que les hablo: curiosas y amantes de las casas embrujadas, las dos chiquillas encontrarán en Totoro lo que en soledad e incertidumbre tanto les falta.  De ahí que la criatura las acompañe en determinados momentos de la historia, tal vez encariñado por la capacidad que tienen de creer en lo fantástico. Él es como un canalizador: quizás como esos peluches que necesitas abrazar para poder dormir.

Encontré en Totoro una belleza inexplicable;  algo que te empuja a sonreír por la  naturalidad en la que se desarrolla el argumento. La inserción de la fantasía radica en los ojos de la inocencia: las niñas protagonistas cubren la obra de principio a fin, sin vacios o rellenos. Dos hermanas que solo querían jugar y ver a su madre sana y en casa, y además esperar a su padre en la parada del bus cubierta de árboles.  Es así como los hechos ocurren de forma aislada, sin un contexto único que defina la necesidad de recorrer el mundo para hallar respuestas. Totoro, entonces, no es más que un personaje con mecánica referencial; sus apariciones son escazas hasta cierto punto, y luego, surge esa combinación hermosa entre la incertidumbre de las hermanas y la aparición de una esperanza saturada en la magia.

Después de ver la película me quedé pensando largo rato;  al igual que esas niñas también me crié en un pueblito rodeado de vegetación y carreteras rurales. Logré conectar mucho con mi propia infancia, con la desaforada imaginación y los días en los que llovía y llovía durante semanas enteras. Imágenes muy hermosas acompañan la obra de Miyazaki, después de todo, es un genio para crear contornos alucinantes con cosas tan cotidianas y simples.

Otra de las grandes características de esta particular animación es su banda sonora: especialmente en los sonidos de la naturaleza. Noté que Totoro tiene cierto gusto por estos, e incluso intenta caracterizarlos con algunos gestos como, por ejemplo, los escalofríos; fue muy divertido cuando lo veía sonreír, o sea, el contorno de sus dientes me recordó al gato que sonreía en Alicia y el País de las Maravillas, ¿coincidencias? Puede ser. La escena del paraguas fue sin duda mi favorita. Tal como dije antes, esta criatura de los bosques apareció muy poco pero, en contraste había una especie de simbolismo.  Eso sí, fue imposible no reír con algunas de las ocurrencias con las que Totoro aparecía frente a las niñas. 

Estas historias con fantasía suave son las que terminan ganándose mi corazón, pues no hay una obligación de explicar el fenómeno mágico sino más bien de convivir con él. Claro que quedé con algunas dudas con respecto a algunos elementos y motivaciones, pero en su mayoría pude disfrutar de Satsuki, Mei y su vecino Totoro. El mensaje de la hermandad y el amor familiar fue lo que me fascinó desde la primera secuencia del largometraje; risas y juegos, y esa conexión increíble entre las hermanas… humanidad: eso es lo que hace a esta obra de Miyazaki  tan especial. ¡Ahí radica la verdadera magia!

Of course, it was impossible not to laugh with some of the occurrences with which Totoro appeared in front of the girls.

>These soft fantasy stories are the ones that end up winning my heart, since there is no obligation to explain the magical phenomenon but rather to live with it. Of course I was left with some doubts regarding some elements and motivations, but for the most part I was able to enjoy Satsuki, Mei and their neighbor Totoro. The message of brotherhood and family love was what fascinated me from the first sequence of the feature film; laughter and games, and that incredible connection between the sisters… humanity: that is what makes this work of Miyazaki so special. Therein lies the real magic!
