While the colony is new and not very established, its important to reduce the entrance to the hive. This allows the guard bees to protect the hive better by just protecting a small opening. If I did not do this robbing bees or other insects may sneak by the guards right outside the entrance to the hive. As the colony grows stronger I can open up more of the doors, since there will be more guard bees. And with the beehive being quite active giving the bees more room to enter and exit will be helpful.

Normally you get a block of wood that comes with the beehive kits, this allows you to change the opening size by rotating it. But from what I have heard the bees will seal this block into place making it quite difficult to remove and change its position. While watching Barnyard Bees do their hives I figured out I can make my own using hardware cloth and cutting openings in it making it fully adjustable.

I cut some small hardware cloth and fold it over on the top and sides to give it more rigidity. Using the piece I cut I test it on the entrance and find it fits well.

Moving onto cutting slits in the hardware cloth so it can be opened and closed as much as I want. I do this by raising or closing the "doors" I cut into it.

Starting to staple the reducer into place I mess up on the first staple and have to pull it back out.

After fixing the first staple I go down the line and put a few more in to hold the screen into place.

Stapling it in a few places it looks sturdy, we shall see how well the staples hold up. I may need to go back and use a more powerful staple gun or drive in more of them. As I noticed a couple of the staples wiggle loose after messing with the doors.



Thats about all I need to do on these beehives, they have been assembled, painted drilled for vents, entrance reducers installed and the frames have been waxed. My last video before the bees arrive will be part two of setting up the honey bee site, I will install the beehives at that time and set up the table and a few other finishing touches.
