The Tomato cuttings are in the ground

About two weeks ago I found some roots forming on cuttings of my Tomato plant. I let the roots grow and get bigger for another week. And then placed them in the ground.

By the time a week past the roots doubled in size and looked ready to put in the soil. I could also put them in an hydroponic or aeroponic system though those are projects I have not gotten into yet.

Once planted they will need a few weeks to adjust. Hoping I get some leaves to form soon, and then some flowers and finally some fruit.

I will need to buy some more cages if these take. And since we still have many months left in our growing season I think they will get bigger.

This is the first time I've grown Tomatoes from cuttings of a bigger plant. We shall see how they do over the next few weeks and months.

Took a selfie before planting them. Its been alot of fun of growing Tomato plants like this. Otherwise you would need to grow from seed.

I never knew that tomatoes can be grown from cuttings @solominer that is fun to know about :D
Here in our backyard we have the poorest soil so we cannot grow vegetables the we liked. Plus my father is not a good "farmer" for that matter and eventually he kills it off into oblivion :/

Ah yeah this is new to me as well. Looking forward to doing it again. Many plants can be grow this way.

Oh yeah, my soil was just average until I started adding truckloads of mulch to the surface of my soil. Now I'm blown away with what grows with such vigor. 

If you know any tree trimming / removal companies they will dump a pile of mulch on your land for free. Or at least that's how it works around where I live.

Tomatoes are the best for cuttings. I have taken tips and gotten them to root. The plant is so aggressive in its growth that just about any piece can clone. I have had plants I have started WAY too early and had to hack them back since it was March and they were 3 feet tall/long. The pieces I cut off most all rooted super easily.

Yeah once the Tomato plant gets a foothold it just takes off. Just amazing how quickly they grow. Oh so you just stuck the cuttings in the ground and they rooted?

I have had cuttings root a bunch of ways, in water, in moist soil, burying a branch to get roots then cutting it, using root-tone or other hormones, and sometimes the plants put off air roots and I have taken the branch above the air roots and had it start growing fine. 

Now I'm thinking I should get some cuttings of my plants growing so I can keep some through the winter. Just keep hacking them back and tossing them into new jars of water until spring.

I wanted to grow tomatoes but never got round to sorting it all out.
I imagine how nice it would be to grow a lovely tomato plant and keep it going like this.

With this method you could buy one plant. Grow it a little and then start taking cuttings. Depending how long your season is, you could have dozens of tomato plants this way.

I think next year I'm gonna start one early on in March or April and then take cutting through the year.

Thanks alot, if you have access to woodchips try working it into your soil. Also digging up trenches and laying down logs inside and then burying adds long term nutrients to your soil.. its called a hugelkultur.

Awesome to grow something of your own especially if it is food!  Try planting a slice of one of those tomatoes that has the seeds in the spring.

I suppose that is how it was meant to happen naturally.  Seed-bearing fruit over ripens and falls to the ground in a rotting and nutrient rich package for growth of the next plant.
