Hello, everyone! It's been a while since I've been here. As you know, I like to finish reading something simple when I feel stuck, and I want to get into high fantasy literature. But I also want to complete my annual challenge (which is proving difficult), so let's see if I can achieve my goal. As is quite common on my blog, I bring you a review of a new fantasy romance book that I just finished reading. It's called Shield of Sparrows, written by Devney Perry.

Como es bastante común en mi blog, les traigo la reseña de un nuevo libro de romance con fantasía que acabo de terminar de leer. Se trata del libro Shield of Sparrows escrito por Devney Perry.

Odessa Cross only wears gray, and her stepmother dyes her hair brown so that no one will notice the red hair that reminds her so much of her mother. Odessa is bad at everything: she can't ride, she can't paint, she has no political skills, she has no friends. She is the eldest daughter of the King of Quentin, but he prefers that his second daughter, who is perfect in everything and skilled with weapons, be the one to marry Prince Zavier Wolve of Turah. But the day he arrives in Roslo, after killing some sea monsters, he demands to take his trophy princess, and instead of taking his fiancée, he decides to stay with Odessa and marry her that very night.
Odessa has only one night for her father to prepare her to carry out the mission for which he had prepared her sister Mae her entire life: to enter the capital of that city, steal Turah's greatest secret, and kill the protector of the kingdom: The Guardian. In a world of fantastic animals, and one that must prepare for the migration of birds that destroy the lives of everyone in sight, Odessa travels to her new land with her two maids and without any skills.

I'm tired of these stories. I think the romance with fantasy and all this boom is coming to an end. There's nothing new. It's the same story of a clumsy girl, or one with some hidden magic, or one who is perhaps ready to fight, but doesn't know what for, who meets a man she hates or wants to kill. But because of their closeness, she begins to fall in love with him. The “enemies to lovers” trope is becoming tiresome without offering us anything new. And that's what has me a little disappointed. Honestly, I doubt I'll continue reading these stories as long as they don't bring me anything new. I'll probably give a couple of them a chance, but I'll go in with no expectations.
What confuses me most about all these stories is that they create spectacular fantasy worlds, but they don't develop them. All this starts because they use the narrative device of writing in the first person so that we believe in them. But they can't develop the world much further because they start by showing what our protagonist knows, and often that's nothing. So, they manage to fill in these gaps in a very uncreative way: by asking another character everything, who is usually another protagonist who ends up getting fed up with so many questions.
Another thing that really bores me about the way these books are written is the number of chapters and scenes that are just filler. I'm annoyed by the countless paragraphs full of descriptions of sword fighting that add nothing to the plot. And I don't mean that it's wrong, it's just that when there are so many of them, they become repetitive. The way to know when a scene is filler is to simply ask yourself, “What would happen if this hadn't happened?” If the answer is “nothing,” it doesn't change the plot or the protagonist, then it's filler. The same goes for the characters. I'm not talking specifically about this novel, because I don't feel that any of the characters have been filler.

>Estoy cansada de estas historias. Creo que el romance con fantasía y todo este boom está tocando su fin. No hay nada nuevo. Son la misma historia de una chica torpe, o con alguna magia oculta, o que tal vez está preparada para luchar, pero no sabe para qué, que conoce a un hombre que odia o que quiere matar, pero que por su cercanía empieza a enamorarse de él. El trope del “Enemies to lovers” está llegando al hartazgo sin darnos una situación nueva. Y esto es lo que me tiene un poco desilusionada. Sinceramente, dudo mucho que vaya a seguir leyendo estas historias mientras no me traigan nada nuevo. Seguramente le dé la oportunidad a un par por allí, pero ya iría sin ningún tipo de expectativas.

>Lo que más me tiene confundida de todas estas historias es que crean unos mundos de fantasía espectaculares, pero no los llevan al desarrollo. Todo esto empezando porque utilizan el recurso narrativo de escribir en primera persona para que nosotras nos creamos ellas, pero no pueden alcanzar el desarrollo de mundo mucho más allá porque empiezan mostrando lo que nuestra protagonista sabe y muchas veces es nada. Entonces, logran rellenar estos huecos de una manera nada creativa: preguntando todo a otro personaje, que generalmente es otro protagonista que se termina hartando de tantas preguntas.

>Otra cosa que también me aburre mucho de la manera en que escriben estos libros es la cantidad de capítulos y escenas de relleno. Me fastidian los innumerables párrafos llenos de descripciones de prácticas de espadas que no aporta nada a la trama. Y no con esto quiero decir que esté mal, es que cuando son tan numerosas, se hacen repetitivas. La manera de saber cuándo una escena es de relleno simplemente hacer el ejercicio de “qué pasaría si esto no habría ocurrido”, y si la respuesta es “nada”, no cambia la trama ni a la protagonista, entonces, es relleno. Lo mismo ocurre con los personajes, no estoy hablando precisamente de esta novela en específico, porque siento que ningún personaje ha sido relleno.

I think that after so many years since this explosion of books in this genre began, these stories could have improved by now. They all seem generic to me, literature created for a market that is known to devour any book regardless of whether the story is profound or not. They produce bestsellers that will be forgotten in a couple of weeks, creating an unhealthy appetite for consumption that is not good for the industry.
On the other hand, it is important to emphasize that a woman does not have to be physically strong to be significant in a story; she can also be intelligent, educated, and contribute to the plot in this way. I know it is not easy to write and publish a novel, and that it is very easy for me to criticize. I believe that if we continue to say that everything is perfect and make the writers who produce these books believe it, they will never improve. And I really want them to succeed, and I hope it happens soon.
The novel isn't bad; in fact, it's better than most I've read, with an ending that left me wanting to read the next one because it holds a mystery. I hope I haven't discouraged you from reading it with this criticism; that's not my intention. In fact, it's based on my experience and my point of view. You'll probably read it and like it. I hope I like the next one better.

> Creo que después de tantos años de que empezó esta explosión de los libros de este género, ya podrían haber mejorado estas historias. Ya hasta me parecen todas genéricas, literatura creada para un mercado que se sabe que devora cualquier libro sin importar si es profunda la historia o no. Hacen best sellers que olvidarán en un par de semanas, y crea un hambre de consumo que no es nada saludable para la industria.

>Por otro lado, es importante recalcar que no hace falta que una mujer sea fuerte físicamente para ser significativa en una historia, también puede ser inteligente, estudiada y aportar de esta manera a las tramas. Sé que no es sencillo hacer y publicar una novela, y que es muy fácil de mi parte hacer una crítica. Considero que si seguimos diciendo que está todo muy perfecto, y haciendo creer a las escritoras que hacen estos libros, y siento que jamás se van a superar. Y yo realmente sí quiero que lo logren, y espero que suceda pronto.
